Sarah Goslee Reed’s new album, “It’s About Time,” lives up to its title in more than one way. The songs are woven through with bittersweet meditations about life and the remorseless passing of the years. But it also marks Reed’s long overdue return to putting out albums of original songs. Her previous solo albums were “Like the Light of the Moon” (1992) and “Cowboy on the Highway” (1994). Here, she matches the friendly twang of her earlier work, while deepening her range of colors and moods.
Reed achieves a remarkable balance between sounding openly vulnerable and sounding vital and quietly unstoppable.
Her youthful voice was very silvery in color, somewhat in the manner of a Joan Baez, as opposed to a more golden voice like an Allison Krauss or a tart one like Emmylou Harris. With the passage of years, Reed’s voice is mellowing without losing its bloom.
I grew up in a musical household - my father played the bassoon in the Cleveland Orchestra and my mother played the cello and string bass. There was always music, mostly live, coming from our house. The folk music of the sixties was very influential, so I taught myself to play the guitar, based upon my knowledge of the violin, while learning songs by listening to records. My newest CD, “It’s About Time” is a tribute to my dad, George Goslee, former principal bassoonist with the Cleveland Orchestra for 43 years. Previous solo recordings, “Like The Light of the Moon” and “Cowboy on the Highway”, also feature my dad playing his bassoon - an unusual accompaniment for folk music. Classical music is still a big piece of my life, as I plays violin in the local county symphony, and recently attended a summer chamber music workshop with members of the Manhattan String Quartet. Besides music, I have a Master of Science Degree in Biology and have worked both in research and clinical microbiology. In addition, I love nature, knitting, and animals and surround myself with as much of those as possible. I live in rural Mount Vernon, Ohio with my husband.
Glad that you are a part of our CD Compilation Opportunity. We are very excited to finally have a chance to make this offer to our artists and all artists out there.
