I've known Sara Risner for about eight years now. I met her through mutual musician friends, yet strangely enough, I never knew that she played piano and sang until I started listening to her MySpace site toward the end of last summer. One by one she added new songs, and I found myself checking on a daily basis for her latest addition. Now, I have to be honest: typically, I don’t make it all the way through most local artists’ original works. However, I found myself listening to Sara’s songs all the way through, and then over again. So I’m very excited about the release of her first CD, “Take Me Down.”
The 26-year-old Milan native began writing songs at the age of 13, using a primitive cassette recorder to track her work.
“I propped the lid to my upright (open) with a perfectly sized bottle of Jack Daniels and set a $20 cassette player inside and began recording my writings and progress,” she told me. “I literally have 13 years of cassettes.”
Writing songs is a special talent that is partly natural and partly developed by years of trial and error. For Sara, songwriting is clearly her greatest strength, as she wrote and arranged each song on the album.
It took the urging of a friend to convince her to start playing her songs for an audience. “At the time I had no gig bags, so my digital 88 (keyboard) was wrapped in a floral comforter, and my monitors were carried in a (borrowed) padded Dale Earnhardt beer cooler,” she said. “It was quite ridiculous, and very entertaining!”
Since then she has been playing solo shows in coffee shops and with a full band at rock clubs in the Cleveland/Akron area. They each have their benefits. “There is an intimacy at an acoustic show and there is an energy when I have my band behind me,” she said.
In January, Sara will be attending the 2009 NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show in Los Angeles. Upon her return, she is planning to have a local CD release party at I-5’s in Huron before heading back to California to work on her career.
“I will stop at nothing to reach my dreams,” said Sara. “I worked very hard to get where I am now. I couldn't be a nurse or teacher; I would be too distracted with the orchestrations in my head! It feels easy and right now, because it is.” **********
