BooksAll sorts really - I listen to audio books mainly, whilst I'm working. After a day of painting my eyes can get kinda tired so I don't sit down and read as often as I'd like/should. I'm a big fan of J.K Rowling, can't help myself I love the Harry Potter series and the audio books are excellent. H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds", George Orwell "Animal Farm/1984", Anthony Burgess "A Clockwork Orange", William Golding "Lord of the Flies". I like psychological thrillers and mystery stuff. Actually have a taste for American History - it has to be presented a certain way -like Sarah Vowells "Assassination Vacation". "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini is a personal favorite, "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America "by Erik Larson, almost anything by David Sedaris. Oh, and cookery books...so many cookery books (my version of porn I think!)
HeroesColin Christian, Darwin, William A. Bouguereau, Tamara De Lempika, Ingres, J.K. Rowling, Mark Ryden, Karim Rashid, Bruce Parry, Sir David Attenborough, Nigella Lawson and pretty much any french pastry chef.

About me:
.. IN THE LAND OF RETINAL DELIGHTS - THE JUXTAPOZ FACTOR, BOOK
In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor Catalog features the work of the artists in this groundbreaking exhibition. Also included are essays by the curator Meg Linton and Museum director Bolton Colburn. Full-color, paperback, designed by Mark Murphy. Now available.

Since 1994, Juxtapoz Magazine, published in San Francisco, has provided a forum for so called Lo-Brow art-work inspired by comics, hot rods, and popular culture --and has become, in the years since, the most widely read art magazine in the United States. Juxtapoz provides a voice and validation for a brand of artist, like founder Robert Williams, Mark Ryden, Coop, Camille Rose Garcia, Glen Barr, the Clayton Brothers, Sas Christian, Isabel Samaras, Joe Coleman, and many, many others, who have not historically been accepted by the typical art-world infrastructure of collector, curator, and critic. However, since its founding, it has become the leverage point for the creation of its own infrastructure that supports Juxtapozian art with galleries around the world, collectors, increasing critical attention, and museum exhibitions at adventurous institutions. This exciting and provocative collection presents a group of artists who rejected traditional rules of the art establishment and created their own canon, known as the Juxtapoz School. Published in conjunction with the Laguna Art Museum for the 2008 exhibition In the Land of Retinal Delights.

Who I'd like to meet:
Trying to think, mmm. The trouble is when I meet people I admire I get all embarrassed and awkward. Would love to have a cup of tea with Sir David Attenborough. To sit down and listen to Werner Herzog would be incredible. Lots of artists that I look up to I've already met (lucky me!) and when I do meet them I get all nervous and just stand there mute. Which sucks. JK Rowling would be a marvelous fascinating person to be able to chat with.
RIP. Would have loved to have met Oliver Reed - he was my first crush! Tamara De Lempicka, what an amazing woman. Alfred Hitchcock would have been a laugh. And of course Cary Grant - he did LSD and went on Carson, you gotta admire his chutzpah...

SON:
Father, look up, and see that flag!
How gracefully it flies!
Those pretty stripes, they seem to be
A rainbow in the skies.

FATHER:
It is your country's flag, my boy,
And proudly drinks the light,
O'er ocean's wave, in foreign climes,
A symbol of our might.

SON:
Father, what fearful noise is that,
Now thundering in the clouds?
Why do they, cheering, wave their hat,
And rush along in crowds?

FATHER:
It is the voice of cannonry,
The glad shouts of the free;
This is a day of memory,
'Tis FREEDOM'S JUBILEE!

SON:
I wish that I was now a man,
I'd free my country too,
And cheer as loudly as the rest;
But, father, why don't you?

FATHER:
I'm getting old and weak; but still
My heart is big with joy;
I've witnessed many a day like this,
Shout you aloud, my boy!

SON:
HURRAH, FOR FREEDOM'S JUBILEE,
God bless our native land!
And may I live to hold the boon
Of freedom in my hand.

FATHER:
Well done, my boy, grow up, and love
The land that gave you birth,—
A land where Freedom loves to dwell,—
A paradise on earth.

After Glow

Hands reach out tentatively to touch the wonder of your face,
your skin translucent like spun glass, only more beautiful.
I could stare into your crystalline eyes for centuries,
bask in the afterglow of your smile until I am dust.

I worry you are oblivious to my feelings – or worse – uncaring.
You seem unaware of the cyclone of emotions roiling
beneath my surface or perhaps too concerned with
your own inner storms, your own demons.

I see a darkness in your eyes sometimes when you think
I am not looking. There is a quality of restlessness about you
that makes me want to reach out to you,
try and comfort you.

Is it possible to be both frightened and fascinated by you?
I sense a storm in your soul, the lightning flash of which
I sometimes catch reflected in your eyes.
I see a question on your lips which I long to answer.

But I know that you and I can never be.
This burgeoning flower of feeling must and will be stopped
before it can open, petal by petal,
and reveal that which I’ve tried so hard to conceal.
