A Short Bio
The Satans were formed in the summer of 2007 by Christopher Greene and Gavin Chubbs, the singer and original guitarist, respectively. They were promptly joined on the bass by Steve Dillon, and on the drums by Patrick Neary. They played their first show at a little bar called CBTGs (don’t ask), dressed in black with faces painted, and people (for some reason) loved it. As time went on the act coalesced, and characters emerged to take the place of the mere mortals behind the instruments. Chapel Ruin replaced Christopher Greene, with his creepy crew, Christian deMise, Jesus Crust, and Judas Revered.
For Halloween that year The Satans released a self-titled six (six six) track demo, espousing such themes as religious dissent, incest, over-the-top violence, vulgarity, and screaming. The demo carried The Satans tongue-in-cheek evil to a wider audience, receiving favorable reviews in several local media outlets. In January the band participated in the Battle of the Fans, a musical tournament offering a top prize of free recording with 110 Records, a new local label. The Satans thrived on competition, and were driven to a final climactic showdown with local metal vets Devastator. At this time Bear Bear (Dave Zegarac) was subbing in for Christian deMise (Patrick Neary), who was in Montreal working with The Embarrassments, another project.
Despite losing the Battle of the Fans to Devastator (by 17 votes), The Satans were signed by 110 Records to do a full-length album. What ensued was a tumultuous time for the band, who began recording the album twice before encountering creative differences with founding member Judas Revered (Gavin Chubbs). A lineup change followed, with the subtraction of Judas Revered, and the addition of Gabriel Slayn (Gene Browne) in June. Christian deMise moved up to become the second guitarist, and Bear Bear remained on the drums. In their new format, the 5-piece finished recording the album, Renovabis Faciem Terrae, which was released on Halloween 2008.
I’ve been a music journalist for more than 10 years. Over the years, many artists and managers have asked me what the best way to break into the European music market is.
