About me:
The Asian American Superhero Anthology
**STEALTH MODE OFF**
Well, it's long overdue that we explain what this MySpace page is all about, so maybe we should introduce ourselves first. I guess I'll start: I'm Jeff Yang, and I write a column for the San Francisco Chronicle's website, SFGate, called Asian Pop. I'm also a long-time comics fan and reader, who grew up kinda sorta always dreaming of someday being able to create a comic book featuring a hero who looked like myself--only, well, more buff and with powers and stuff, of course. The real world intruded, and I ended up doing other things (like launching an Asian American mag called aMagazine, which is now gone--we sold it to an Internet company that went broke during the dot-com era, to our chagrin). And now I work as a strategist, translating Asian and Asian American trends for the consumer insights and advisory firm Iconoculture. I also write a "mailblog" (basically, a very personal email newsletter) called Instant Yang, which you're welcome to subscribe to if you want an update on Asian pop culture, media, and politics every two weeks or so. It's also archived, slowly, at this Blogspot site. Anyway, one of my columns back then was about the recent rise of Asian American and other multicultural heroes in comics: LOOK! UP IN THE SKY...IT'S ASIAN MAN!. In it, I talked about how cool it would be to put together an anthology about the concept of the superhero--and why it has special meaning to Asian American boys as they grow up. (Something about being rooted in a distant place, visiting the world of mortal men...your true self hidden by a secret identity.) Well, one of the people I interviewed for the piece was Keith Chow, who works as an educational markets specialist for a major player in the comics industry. And he, too always wanted to do something like this. And he in turn connected me with indie comics prodigy Jerry Ma, of Epic Proportions. Anyway, the three of us got to talking, and then to planning. And now we're doing this thing for real. I'll let Keith and Jerry introduce themselves, but watch this space for more news, as this project takes off. Up, up, and away!

Who I'd like to meet:
Secret Identities is seeking submissions now. If you’re a writer, artist, or comics creator who’s interested in contributing an idea, script, sketch, or full-blown story to this groundbreaking new anthology, to be published in softcover by The New Press in Spring 2009, contact us at info@secretidentities.org for further details and full submission guidelines. We want fun, subversive, illuminating, and imaginative works that live in or comment on the superhero world, while exploring the idea of the extraordinary side of ordinary Asian American. Look forward to hearing from you!
