and, of course,
Newspaper/ web cartoonist, spot illustrator, indy comic book writer and artist
Welcome! I am a cartoonist, a comic book author, and an award-winning illustrator. I have also been, among other things, a standup comic, a fry cook, middle management, a bartender, a busboy, a signmaker, and a copier repair man.
Here are some places where you may have seen my artwork:
Editorial Cartoons for Newsday, the VOICE, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and wcbsnewyork.com. You can see them on my archaic website.
Comic Books published by Radio Comix, House of Twelve Comics, Manual Comics and one hardcover from North Light Books.
February 2009: I was a finalist in the New Yorker's Eustace Tilley Art Competition:
My illustration, entitled Schach Treatment, is a reinterpretation of the venerable magazine’s mascot, whose likeness was created by the New Yorker’s first art director, Rea Irvin, and for whom the annual contest is named. Selected from over three hundred entries, it is featured on the New Yorker’s website in a slideshow of twelve winning designs curated by New Yorker Art Director Françoise Mouly. Congratulations to my fellow entrants, and many thanks to the New Yorker, especially Ms. Mouly and Ms. Stein!
Here's my other entry, which didn't place, but I still like it:
MAN GETS KARMIKAZE™ TATTOO!
Wow! I'm overwhelmed. Many thanks to friend and (apparently) superfan, Denis Naughton for this (unsolicited) above and beyond show of dedication to the Princess of Payback™. Befriend, him, won't you? Click on the pic to get to his page.
Black and white and read all over...: My KARMIKAZE™ comic was quoted by a reader on the New York Times' website last month! Thank you, Adam McGovern, wherever you are.
Strange but True Comic Strip Credential: Comic book legend Joe Giella used me as the visual model for Dr. Lucas Weckerly a minor character that appeared briefly in the Mary Worth comic strip in the early 1990's. (SO minor and SO briefly, apparently, as to be virtually search engine-proof!) To be candid, Mr. Giella wanted Weckerly to look like "someone that no one would BELIEVE was a doctor." (Grunge was in that year...)
Strange but True Punk Credential: I drew the cartoon featured on the front of the "Beat on the Brat" T-shirt for the RAMONES' final tour. I never got to meet most of them, but sincere thanks to the RAMONES for a gig that opened doors for me. Special thanks to Chris(CJ), Arturo, and Adriane for having made it happen.
Here are some of my other drawings, starting with "The Corporate Ladder", which seems to be popular with the cubicle crowd...
Wouldn't you LOVE to spend your last days of solvency in fiscally fashionable Corporate Ladder attire? SURE you would!

I self-publish both the KARMIKAZE and One Man Thology comics. A sampling can be found in my MySpace photos and on my website, but why wait?

You have a great style, Steve, and a clever wit. Pretty disappointing how there are more magazines out there than ever before but far less work for illustrators! I can remember in the '60s where just about every magazine cover had a great caricature drawing.
My Xeric grant winning book "Jazz: Cool Birth" is now in comic shops, a murder mystery in a 1957 jazz bar, with art and type based on '50s album cover design, dig? Bebop for your glims.
I'm looking forward to exploring the MySpace pages of all of my new "friends" (Man, does that sound square).
Peace!
