Seth Elgart has been playing synthesizers since he got his first Minimoog in 1979. He's added a few more synths over the years, but he still has that first Moog.
The music is a combination of many elements. Thick, juicy textures usually start things off, then you might find arpeggios swirling over and around those textures. Synthesized bass lines point out the time, with maybe some rhythmic textures added on top.
Not counting the family piano, his sister's acoustic guitar starting when he was 8 or a small pile of different band instruments in junior high, Seth's first recognizable musical recordings started in the early '80s on his Radio Shack answering machine. Tapes of those first recordings, featuring the Minimoog, a Roland Space Echo and a Moog Sample and Hold module, are rumored to still exist at the bottom of an unidentified New York City closet. A few years later, not sure he could actually pull it off, Seth participated in his first jam sessions with musicians with whom he would later form the bands Everest and then later, K2.
Now, 25 years later, Seth records on a Mac with Ableton Live using an array of analog and digital synthesizers. From modular synthesizers to digital beatboxes, though, the emphasis is still on those rich, creamy textures.
Seth and his long-time musical buddy E. Doctor Smith have recently released their first K2 album on Edgetone Records. He is now working on his next album, tentatively called Soundtrack Of No Film.
