one-man (or w/ band, live) lo-fi pop, a combination of early Wailers with world-traveled punch. Kaufman piles Kinks-like distorted racket and Southern soul with unmistakable hip-shaking dub on his latest efforts. Layers of tape-hiss smother a deep-fried take on British pop via Motown, and leaves just enough room for a simple layout of breathy keyboards, authentic Detroit twang, scratchy bass and do-wop choirs. He shines on the blues, mourning loves and “darlins,” but can easily follow with Isley Brothers-style soul.

Well no, she didn't make it after all. Her tail wrapped around a tree, broke the frame, jostled the exhaust system. She just gave up. And Jak was sad. I am now moved on to the world of the very old volvo station wagon - less fabulous, more space.
