Shawn Christopher began practising on the decks when he was 14 and House Music was his first love. Coming up in the ranks alongside veterans such as Josh Wink and King Britt, Shawn landed his first job at the Trocadero nightclub in Philadelphia at age 16. Gigs at underground clubs, The
Nile, The Fever and Bassline followed.
Dance music was at its peak in New York City, and Shawn regularly drove to the Big Apple to see Little Louie
Vega and David Depino play house and classic garage at the famous Sound Factory Bar.
In 1992, Shawn quit
commuting and moved to New York. He quickly dove into the scene, holding down a Friday night residency on the main dance floor of The
Limelight for 2 1/2 years, until the prestigious club closed its doors in the latter part of 1995.
Meanwhile, he religiously went to see Junior Vasquez play every Saturday at Sound Factory. Vasquezs
harder, tribal sound remained a strong influence in the years that followed as Shawn began throwing after
parties attended by Sound Factory habitues on Sunday evenings that lasted well in Monday morning.
After four months in Miami, where he played the VIP room at Princes club, Glam Slam, Shawn returned to
New York and began promoting his own Saturday night party, Climax, as well as holding down a residency at
The Tunnel.
Day jobs at Vinylmania Records and Wave Music set a strong foundation for Shawns love of music. Vinylmania,
an obligatory stop for disciples of Larry Levan after a night at the legendary Paradise Garage, sells the
deepest and finest house music in New York. While there he built up and impressive clientele that included such well knowns as David Morales, Wesley Snipes, Quentin Tarantino and Q-Tip. Wave is the label of mercurial producer/DJ, Francois Kevorkian,
who infects his music with strong jazz, drum and techno influences. Kevorkian was also founder and one of the
resident DJs at the popular Sunday tea dance, Body & Soul which was a huge influence on Shawn's Musical and DJ style.
Shawn was now spinning underground house at Providence, Filter 14, Destiny, Glass and Nicky Sianos 12
West party at Cheetah; commercial house, hip hop and R&B at clubs including Webster Hall, Centro Fly, Spirit
and Strata; and jazz-influenced lounge sets at upscale bars, restaurants and hotels, such as Metronome, Soho
Grand, Tribeca Grand, Essex, Lot 61 and Lotus. He also performed radio spots on Island Underground in New
York and Radio FG in Paris.
In 2001, he joined Jellybean Recordings, the label of producer Jellybean Benitez. A&R Coordination wasn't far behind and He
released Watersong by Scumfrog, which included his own remix in collaboration with Mike Dominico, who
has released dance remixes of Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears. This release went on to become one of
Jellybeans highest all time sellers.
He also helped create the idea for the offshoot label, Jellybean Soul one of the companys most successful gambits to this day.
Shawn moved to Sydney, Australia in 2004 to study sound engineering and music production, he continued to serve a blissful cocktail of deep, soulful and percussive house to a Sydney crowd during his monthly residency at
Musica.
Wanting to gain even more experience in the different aspects in the "Sound Industry" Shawn worked at Trackdown Studios where he was able to take part in the score recording of the Academy Award Winning, Computer animated film "Happy Feet" which involved the recording of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and working with Composer John Powell (Shrek & Ice Age) and Engineer Shawn Murphy (Star Wars & Raiders of the Lost Ark) as well as Trackdowns Chief Music Engineers Simon Leadley and Tim Ryan.
In late 2006 New York City called back to Shawn with the inception of a label called Muted Trax by long time friend Mike Dominico where he handles the labels logistics and even more recently has begun doing A&R Coordination for a new label called Physical Graffiti from the legendary Strictly Rhythm Music Group which he is aggressively searching for new material for.
Shawn has also been writing monthly music reviews at DJ Times magazine for 8 years and has had feature interviews with artists like David Morales, Jay Denes, Blue Six (Naked Music), Alex Gopher and Kerri Chandler.
