Ha, you asked for it! In no particular order, Bill Monroe, Flatt &; Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, The Delmore Brothers, hell all the early brother bands. Favorite contemporary bluegrass bands include New Grass Revival, The Seldom Scene with John Duffy, Blue Highway, and Old Crow Medicine Show. I'm a big fan of high energy Old Time music, not the wussy groove-band stuff some people play now, but bands like The Skillet Lickers, The Georgia Yellowhammers, and ass-kicking old-time fiddlers like Uncle Bunt Stephens, Eck Robertson, Joe Birchfield and more recently, I really dug The Freight Hoppers. I'm also fan of lyric based songwriters. I think Townes VanZandt rivals Woody Guthrie as the best songwriter of the 20th Century. I also listen to John Prine, Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen, Nanci Griffith - you get the drift. In case you aren't bored yet, 70s and 80s classic rock bands and southern rock bands trip my trigger too, especially Van Halen, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, The Allman Brothers, Skynyrd. And finally, there are times when I don't want to listen to anything but The Grateful Dead!
Leaving Knoxville's busiest bluegrass band for a new life near Annapolis, Maryland, Shawn Kimbro brings a taste of Tennessee to the Chesapeake Bay. Passionately delivering his homespun Appalachian originals with an authentic mountain dialect, his music drips with the mellow flavors of sour-mash whiskey and Smoky Mountain honey. Shawn began his performance career at back-woods barn dances in East Tennessee as the front man for his family band, Mountain Soul. Known for superior musicianship and blazing bluegrass flavored with rock and classic country, Mountain Soul became one of Knoxville's best-known acoustic bands playing regularly to standing-room-only crowds in the region's finest venues and favorite watering-holes. His versatility and innovation led a local newspaper to write, "Shawn Kimbro has so much talent it's embarrassing." Stay tuned as Shawn puts together a new cast of Mid-Atlantic musicians to deliver his unique blend of blazing bluegrass, tear-jerkin' country, and home-grown original tunes all set against an Appalachian backdrop of livin', lovin', drinkin', and killin'.
