Versatile percussionist Shawn Mativetsky performs in a variety of musical genres with dynamism and skill. Equally at home in Western classical and contemporary/new music, Indian classical music, and world music, Shawn also composes and performs music for dance and theatre. He is active in the promotion of the tabla and North Indian classical music through lectures, workshops, and performances across Canada and the United States. Based in Montreal, Shawn teaches tabla and percussion at McGill University, where he also directs the McGill Tabla Ensemble.
As an ensemble musician, Shawn Mativetsky’s wide range is evident in his work with three very different groups: the contemporary music collective, Ensemble Mont-Royal, violinist Parmela Attariwala's cross-cultural Attar Project, and the Indian-folk group Galitcha. Shawn has given acclaimed solo performances at the Banaras Hindu University (India), the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, and the Société des Arts Technologiques. He has been featured in several contemporary music series and festivals and has appeared as a soloist with numerous ensembles.
Shawn Mativetsky is a ganda-band disciple of Pandit Sharda Sahai of the Benares tabla gharana and has also studied tabla with Bob Becker. Shawn holds a Master's degree in music from McGill University and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Il détient une maîtrise en musique de l’Université McGill et a reçu des bourses du Conseil des Arts du Canada, du ministère du Patrimoine canadien et du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Hey Shawn ! You're right, we NEED to record real tablas on this tunes. If you have some free time in Montreal, why not to do a recording session with you on the tabla on this songs ? Just keep in mind, if you're interrested, I'll be very happy ;) I'm supposed to be back in Montreal in two months, I hope we'll have the time to meet each other, 'cause last time I was in the mess !
