Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Ella Fitzgerald, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield, Billie Holiday, Lenny Kravitz, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Frank Zappa, Bee Gees, Queen, music our parents listened to, music of our youth, music that hasn't been made yet
Sounds Like
An after-hours cocktail of sultry rock, fervent rhythm and blues and unrepentant soulfulness.
Distinctive, smoky vocals, genuine soulfulness, and gutsy bravado alongside a rock solid rhythm section, scorching jazz chords, and sophisticated blues-drenched guitar riffs.
The Shelly Phelps Band defines versatility with elements of rock, rhythm and blues, soul, and jazz. Vocalist Shelly Phelps, guitarist Rob Vollmar, bassist Warren Roach, and drummer Erol Coulter honor old school influences and classic singer-songwriters with their unique perspective. Based out of the Oklahoma City area, they are recognized for their melodious, rhythm-driven soul rock, delivered with sophisticated blues chords and jazz-drenched guitar riffs and thick, smoky vocals. Phelps’ gripping and earthy lyrics touch on the intricacies of relationships, take a passionate stand on social issues, and articulate a preference for living an authentic life.
In 2004 the band released “Girl On The Wire”, a collection of versatile original songs, to favorable reviews. Preston Jones of the Oklahoma Gazette wrote “Working with the rock-solid rhythm section, Phelps’s distinctive smoky vocals wrap themselves around these barroom vignettes like so much satin.” The lyrics were the creative conclusion of an era of grief and uncertainty due to the loss of a Phelps’ cherished brother and a period of time spent not performing. The band paid tribute to the music that shaped their musicianship, resulting in a hybrid of their artistic influences. “Girl On The Wire” has it all as far as song styles, from a touch of funk to country, from samba to rock solid R&B. And Phelps’ smoky vocals handle each one, aided by her strong and steady three-piece backup. But something special happens when she goes to R&B, the genre that she absolutely owns.” writes Kevan Breitinger of Indie-Music.com.
The group is currently recording a new collection of rock and soul originals centered on personal enlightenment and social issues and obviously more focused on the more soulful side of their tastes. Vollmar envisions a sound that is “Dirty, punchy, soulful, and always aimed at getting the listener to move, even if just on the inside.” Phelps adds, “We’re going to play to our strengths on this one. “Girl On The Wire” was all about exploring our versatile influences, yet the “soul factor” kept surfacing. So we will focus on the raw, gritty, and sometimes haunting, soulful bluesy rock that is our truest nature.” The band expects to release the new cd early 2008

My therapist and I were working on it, but she suddenly was called away to Scottland. Apparently her hometown was being attcked by a large monster made of bread crumbs or something like that... I dunno, but when she gets back, if she gets back, we should continue to make progress =)
I've been o.k. But you know how it is, rockin' and rollin' and what-not. I've just been keeping myself busy. I recently took up knitting, but something terrible happened with that that I'm not even about to recount here (but it involved a traveling salesman, a tub of vanilla ice cream, and some really hungry wool. ) Needless to say, I no longer knit, and probably never will again!
Haven't found a house just yet. Still looking. Hopefully I will find one soon. It's a pain in the hind quarters. And thanks for the birthday wishes. Lata gata.
