“Chi-Skilz is Maaaaaaaagic” – Chi-City’s Freshest MC

Chi-Skilz blazes the dawn in a new era of emcees. The Chicago-bred artist manifests the essence of skills in the purist form. The no nonsense emcee sparks the inevitable gift of a true lyricist.

Skilla crushes the microphone as a tool to birth messages through your speakers. You wanna freestyle? Party? Battle? Wild out? Drop science? Yeah, Chi-Skilz can unmistakably do it all.

Chi-Skilz, short for "Chicago Skills", was first introduced to Hip-Hop while living in the notorious Cabrini Green Housing Projects on Chicago's Northside in the mid-late 80's. Movies like Beat Street, Krush Groove and Wildstyle influenced Skilla and introduced him to the elements of Hip-Hop; emceeing, DJing, graffiti art, break dancing and the unofficial element, beat boxing.

Skilla developed a love for Hip Hop by experiencing basement house parties in the early 90's. He listened to his sister's collection of rap vinyls on turntables while skipping classes in elementary school. Education was important, but music served as the medicine to his stress away from the classroom.

The influences of Slick Rick, Rakim, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J and the late Tupac Shakur further ignited Skilla's passion for listening to rap. It wasn't until he met a lady friend that influenced him to rhyme.

"I really started rhyming after I lost my virginity to a lady friend," Skilla said carelessly. "I started freestyling in her ear, macking, and that got her heated. We did the damn thing and that's how it began. Big up to shorty who influenced me to rhyme...whatever her name was."

Skilla sharpened his flows in the mid-90's while attending junior high school. He developed from a poet to a quintessential emcee while displaying a wide range of metaphors, wordplay, storytelling ability and a unique style of rhyme structure to separate him from the rest of the oversaturated game.

"I'm not the type of cat who'll confuse people and say 'I keep it real' and then come out my face and say 'this is only entertainment,'" confirmed Skilla. "I'm the type of cat who'll take a girl out to McDonald's on Valentine's Day and not even think of it. You'll say I'm wrong for that, but hey, it's the little things that count."

Skilla hustled his first EP, Sun of a Field Negro, on his college campus selling close to 700 copies before graduating.

"I was literally eating off music," explained Skilla. "I worked two jobs on campus to pay for studio time and beats, and I ate by using the money I've made from selling CDs."

Songs on the Sun of a Field Negro EP like "Crooked Cops", "Like Mother, Like Daughter" and "Freedom Song" each convey a message to the audience. He also adds humor on songs like "Magic" and "Internet Love". The EP is available for sale on www.cdbaby.com/chiskilz.

Skilla released his first full-length CD, This Ain't A Mixtape Vol 1: Charismatic Superfly, on November 21st with bangas like "Knoc Em Out Da Box!!!", "Charismatic Superfly", and "The Flyest Girl".

The music video for "Knock Em Out Da Box!!!" was shot at various places in Chicago during the summer of 2006 and is available for viewing at www.myspace.com/skillachi

"'Charismatic Superfly'" will show a wider range of songs than Sun of a Field Negro," said Skilla between sips of gold Alize. "It'll show improvements of my thoughts, flows and songwriting abilities."

The bonafied lyricist will shed light with words that'll bless your eardrums. Give him the mic and watch him do the damn thing. Beware and prepare to know the phrase, "Chi-Skilz is maaaaagic!"
