    Socialist Standard's Interests
General

Do want the long version or the short version?

*Sigh* Everyone wants the short version.

This is an unofficial page for the Socialist Standard that I set up a couple of years ago after moving to the United States from Britain.

I'm a long term supporter/member of the organisation, the Socialist Party of Great Britain, that publishes the Socialist Standard and, with this page, I'm merely seeking to raise the profile of both the magazine and its politics.

Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not trying to recruit you. I'm not trying to brainwash you . . . and I'm not even trying to sell you a timeshare in a revolution. Been there, done that. Got the washed out T shirt.

If you find the politics of the magazine are agreeable to your taste, then please go to the following pages for more information:

  • World Socialist Party of the United States
  • Socialist Party of Great Britain
  • Socialist Party of Canada
  • As I mentioned above, this is an unofficial page for the magazine, so I will from time to time post articles, book reviews and other materials from other magazines and books that I find of interest.

Sometimes they are from the same political tradition as the Socialist Standard, sometimes they are not. Like the articles posted from the Socialist Standard, I think they provide food for thought and hope people find them of interest even when they may not agree with every dot and comma of the piece posted.

My own personal MySpace page is over here but it's been a while since I signed in. I think the last time I checked my personal page, Ben Affleck still had his own hair. I also have a blog called Inveresk Street Ingrate but that's only for people who like bad jokes, have a love/hate relationship with Glasgow Celtic and obsess over obscure and not so obscure post-punk music from October 1981.

One last point of clarification: The music, tv shows and films listed on the page are to my taste, not the Socialist Standard's.

The magazine does not currently have a position on the merits or otherwise of the Gang of Four or Freaks and Geeks. Don't worry, I'm working on it.

Thanks again for checking out the page and the magazine. Hope it hits the spot.

    all the best,

    Darren

PS - Aren't you glad that you asked for the short version?

       Socialist Standard's Blurbs
    About me:

Have you ever read the Socialist Standard, the monthly journal of the Socialist Party of Great Britain? First published in September 1904, it has been published continuously since then. On the cutting edge of social commentary, it offers you an up-to-date critique of contemporary capitalism, the most persuasive arguments you are likely to encounter for a genuinely socialist society. Against the gross misrepresentations that the term "socialism" has suffered throughout the last one hundred years - from its false association with tyrannical regimes claiming to be "socialist" to its absurd appropriation by labour politicians who simply want to run capitalism better than the Tories - the Socialist Standard has, from the very start, presented a consistently clear concept of what socialism really means, and always has meant: a completely voluntaristic society in which we shall freely give according to our abilities and freely take according to our self-determined needs."

Curious? Skeptical? Then why not take advantage of our free trial offer? We will send you 3 consecutive monthly issues absolutely FREE and with no obligation on your part whatsoever. All you need do is write to us at the address listed in the advert above stating that you wish to try our 3 month trial subscription or send an email to spgb@worldsocialism.org with your address details, mentioning that you want to take advantage of the trial offer as advertised on MySpace.

The rain to the wind said,
    'You push and I'll pelt.'
They so smote the garden bed
    That the flowers actually knelt,
    And lay lodged--though not dead.
I know how the flowers felt.
