Self-proclaimed electro-pop superstar Sonic Dragolgo is a curious character.
Born Kozaburo Narita in Tokyo, Japan, he found himself attracted to electronica as a teenager, buying his first synth at 17 years old. He carries a startling self-assuredness and a natural comedic gift that is surreal,entertaining and refreshing.
Sonic..s live shows are a wonderful spectacle, as he somehow manages to play guitar, operate a synth, sing and play with a Bob The Builder glove- puppet at the same time. His music straddles human emotions .. humour, melancholy, joy and regret .. while remaining gleefully unselfconscious.
Taking his name from an amalgamation of Japanese animations Doraemon and Golgo 13, as well as a certain videogame hedgehog, Sonic Dragolgo began his techno career when he signed with Tokyo label Hyper Rich in 1994. His first song, ..Young Manjiro.., was scooped up the following year for release on a compilation, catching the ear of internationally-renowned DJ Ken Ishii. Ishii..s endorsement helped the track became a hit within the local techno scene, and Sonic soon found himself the subject of recognition and respect, resulting in work writing music for MTV.
In 2001, after several domestic releases, he decided to leave Japan for a life of adventure in Berlin, taking with him 50 songs written in just 33 days. German label Klang Krieg selected 10 of these, releasing the album ..Don..t Stop The Music... Meanwhile, he shared vinyl in the States with Matmos, Kid606, CEX and more on a Tigerbeat6 compilation.
In 2002, drawn by the climate, he moved to London, where he still lives. He soon found a seven-single, one-album deal with Palm Beats, a label founded by Island Records pioneer Chris Blackwell. Through them he released one 7.. a month for three consecutive months in 2003/2004, before the label..s UK branch was closed and its artists discharged.
But with his ineffable self-belief, Sonic persevered, continuing to play shows around the UK and releasing his ..Apple.. album in 2005 on Hyper Rich. In recent years he has played with visiting Japanese bands including Polysics, as well as UK-based acts Mika Bomb and Yumi Yumi.
