REVIEW OF THE TRAWLING THROUGH SLUDGE 7''
Reviewed on 20/08/2008 by Daredevil Records
Birminghams (UK) SONIC LORD bring out this nice limited to a 250 pressing 7inch, colored vinyl. They see themself in the Stoner/Doom genre, well this hits the nail pretty good. The first THE FALLEN reminded me a bit of the great ELECTRIC WIZARD in a more Rockin' way, the voice has the needed deepth and soul, and the chords sing a bit the GOATSNAKE tune. The flipside delivers THE PROPHECY an even slower paced Doom Rocker. The package also includes a nice plectrum and the ep as a CD version.
The nice warm sound gives the final cut to this diamond.

Fuck me, these guys mean business!!! This has balls made of iron and coated with lead!!!
A two song 7" from this Midlands bunch is really just a tease, it's nowhere near enough... I want a fucking album... I don't want this to stop. In fact at the end of the second song I just want to turn it over and start all over again!!!
I was already suitably impressed by the track 'Come Back Down Again' from the Catacomb Records 'Sound of the Catacombs' compilation. That was one of the undisputed highlights of that album, so when this little beauty landed on my doormat I couldn't get the package open quick enough... damn cellotape and damn Catacomb Records for their efficient packing!!!
Both tracks here, 'The Fallen' and 'The Prophecy' plough a similar furrow... but what a fucking furrow. Huge Sabbath style riffs grind along with a maniac leer. This isn't the Sabbath of the mid 70s... cocaine, limos, groupies... this is a Sabbath with a blade in its pocket standing in wait in a dimly lit alleyway. This is nasty shit.
The music is one thing here but it's the vocals that tip this black hearted baby over the edge. I'm not usually a big fan of the shouty style of vocals but here they're executed with such passion, clarity and intent that they cannot be ignored. They grab you by the hair, drag you screaming and with a size 12 boot grind your face into the pavement.
If the songs, riffs and performances weren't one thing, the production hammers nails into your forehead... who said CDs were better than vinyl???
This appears to be a limited run of 250 copies on coloured vinyl...mine's a fetching shade of orange (the same as my 7" copy of 'Motorhead' by Motorhead from 1977...that's vintage for ya!!!). Not only that but it comes with a heavy duty Sonic Lord plectrum... that could come in handy at some point. Be one of the select few and get this... now!!!
"The Fallen" has just been featured in issue 1219 of Kerrang Magazine in their "Top Ten Tracks You Must Hear" chart. They said “...If you like enough low end that the neighbours can feel it three doors down the street, you're gonna love the sludgy glory of Sonic Lord"

I take it you're all familiar with Black Sabbath. Just take a moment to reflect and think back to some of you favourite classic Sabbath moments...done that? Always a pleasure isn't it. Now imagine how that would sound if messers Osbourne, Iommi and co had been force fed ketamine. It's still recognisable but not so nice isn't it? Now imagine Sabbath force fed ketamine and chained to a wall in a filthy cellar while their girlfriends are getting fucked in front of them by a biker gang. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Sonic Lord!!!
Never in 40 years of the existence of doom and stoner rock has it ever sounded so pissed off and so vital. Sonic Lord take those first 6 milestone Sabbath albums, encase them in granite, shoot them through with iron rivets, wrap them in barbed wire then throw them down a steep staircase at you.
This 7" release on the small but perfectly formed Catacomb Records offers up a teasing two tracks of prime sludge doom. The riffs come thick and heavy. Dave Day, also of Aluna and Godsize, is a master of economic and effective bludgeon. Dream Theatre this ain't...thank fuck!!! You'll be remembering these riffs in the same way you'd remember being butted in the face...but you'll love it. Vocally this is nasty stuff. Whereas most metal vocalists will grunt and growl in some vain attempt to sound aggressive, vocalist Rich sounds like he is being compelled to drown out the voices in his head!! His impassioned and heartfelt bellow is delivered with a needle-sharp clarity that jabs its thumbs into your eyeballs. I dread to think what this guy will be like live, surely he can't keep this delivery up without suffering an aneurysm or at the very least a full anal prolapse!!!
The production here is everything you would expect, heavier than a 20 stone dude hanging off your nuts by his fingernails. Turn it up and feel your eardrums pulse.
Catacomb obviously care about delivering a quality package. The artwork is fantastic featuring a naked chick...trawling through sludge. Not only is it literal, it also has a naked chick...perfect!!! This is also on gaudy orange vinyl and comes with a Sonic Lord plectrum. A nice touch that makes that little bit of difference over a CD. Buy this, even if you don't have a turntable buy it as in a few years time this will be regarded as a milestone release. Now, where's the album?

Hey hey Long time no see, Hows it going? hope things are keeping well for you?
We've changed our band name recently, and just thought we'd let you know about it.
We decided to change from KALEB to DETHONATOR, owing to the presence of other artists trading under the name KALEB. Our new band name DETHONATOR has been chosen to avoid confusion and to promote a brand that stands alone.
Tnx 4 the add friends ‡ Probably you will like Fury Buffalo. Atmospheric Metal with impregnations grindcore and sludge. You can listen to it on ours Myspace and Download for FREE!

PALEHORSE: One of the most truly devastating and encapsulating live experiences you'll ever see. On tour in the UK, Palehorse bring their crusty but occasionally sweet alt-crust-sludge to crumple the Sheffield Red House, leaving no survivors
MOLOCH: Relatively new faces, but hitting the ground running are Notts based Moloch. These ex-members of Army of Flying Robots bring a sickening blend of the riffs and hooks of traditional sludge with the noise roots of crust punk. Shocking to the core, in the most satisfying of ways
BERSERKOWITZ: South Yorkshire's own deviants of Eyehategod/Bongzilla worship Berserkowitz have tried and tried to warn the Red House what having them back to their beautiful establishment will do for their health, but they just won't listen.
