WHO'S BEHIND SOULGASM-NYC?
"The Wizard" DJ Brian Coxx
co-creator and resident DJ of the weekly Wednesday night party, Soulgasm NYC, which just celebrated its 3 year anniversary, has taken New York City by storm. Music enthusiasts, party people and dancers from as far as Japan, Switzerland and Spain come to hear “The Wizard” who still believes in the art of DJing.
Growing up on B-boy and dance culture recording the late night mix shows from DJs such as Red Alert, Chuck Chill Out and Tony Humphries, Coxx has always been immersed in music, fusing rock, funk, soul and house to motivate party people from all walks of life. Coxx's diverse musical background is what sets him apart from the new jack DJs that have flooded the New York market as of late.
Starting out as a dancer, at clubs like Sound Factory Bar and Vinyl, Coxx was intrigued by the sounds the way the energy of a dope mix could move the crowd. It was just a matter of time before he started spinning records from his own extensive collection at various New York City clubs.
Currently, his mix leans towards The Deep Underground House sound, but his many different influences show up throughout, keeping it authentic to his roots. Coxx has been known to drop the needle on anything from the psychedelic rock of Jimi Hendrix to the dubbed out sounds of Lee Perry, while always working people's minds as well as their bodies.
Each week a loyal and talented following come to hear Brian and his style of mixing, reminiscent of the days of clubs like Paradise Garage when the DJ would throw all types of music into their sets. Never afraid of changing tempos and always working your mind as well as your body, Brian keeps it all relative. Some say that Coxx is the essence of what represents house NOW.
Brian Coxx’s diverse and heart pounding sets have led him to play alongside legends such as, Louie Vega, Jellybean Benitez,, Red Alert and Timmy Regisford for Club Shelter's 15 yr. Anniversary. It’s no wonder that making music would be the next step in this young and talented DJ-Producer's career.
Recently, Coxx teamed up with production partner Alias Rhythm for his first release called "Nothing More" which will be out in 2009 on Shelter 157 Records. Coxx says "It has a crossover appeal. It’s an old school concept with a new school sound".
Also, be on the lookout for Coxx’s new EP “Soulgasm Sessions-Volume 1” on Strictly Rhythm Music as well as releases and remixes for Mr. V on Sole-Channel Records in early 2009.
Wed. night at Sin Sin is where you can see and hear DJ BRIAN COXX stay true to his roots and keep the party people movin, groovin and anticipating what will be played next. Remember how it used to be?. IT STILL IS.
