Space Eater was formed as a project of former members of the band called After Life, Boško Radišić (vocals) and Stanislav Šaršanski (lead guitar) in late 2003, but without moving in any direction after several months and only a couple of rehearsals the idea was put to rest. It was brought back in October 2004, when Karlo Testen (bass) and Nemanja Pavlović (guitar) were introduced to the band, as well as an old After Life compatriot Nikola Roglić (drums). This combination turned out to be perfect for what the band needed and it has been proved soon. With one completely finished song back from the After Life period (‘Afterlife’), Space Eater quickly took of and made another original song (‘Merciful Angel’). The band then applied for the national Radio 202 Demo Masters Tournament and reached semifinals, where its performance was interrupted by the police due to violent moshing and band never actually finished it. Although the band hadn’t gone to finals, it was called to perform as guest on the finals night that was broadcasted live nationwide and recorded in the Radio Belgrade’s Studio 6. That night Space Eater for the first time presented 2 new tracks, an intro titled ‘Beyond Time’ (which would later be renamed ‘MCMXCIX’ on the album) and a new song ‘Bombs Away’.
Soon after that, the band had to part ways with the drummer, Nikola. The temporary replacement behind the drum battery was Vladimir Jevtić, the former member of the sadly defunct band Dungeon Bell. At this time the drummer for the band is Vladimir Bogdanović from our friend thrash metal band Underdeath.
In February 2005 band has recorded a live demo at Studio 6 of Radio Belgrade that is available for download on the band’s official site and features 3 songs + intro: ‘Beyond Time’, ‘Bombs Away’, ‘Afterlife’ and ‘Merciful Angel’.
In 2005 Space Eater entered qualifications for “Zaječarska Gitarijada”, the oldest and the biggest competition for unsigned rock bands, and took third place amongst numerous participating bands nationwide. Space Eater was the only metal band to enter the finals. The live recording of ‘Bombs Away’ featured on “Bombs Away!” demo is from the finals of that event broadcasted on national TV.
March 2006 saw the release of a new 3-track demo “Bombs Away!” that features following songs: ‘Bombs Away’, ‘Merciful Angel’ and ‘Space Eater’. Demo was again recorded at Studio 6, but on professional equipment and at the time was representative for what Space Eater stands for: speed, strength and strong sense of melody. This demo has been awarded the ‘demo of the month’ title in April issue of Serbian Metal Hammer magazine.
In the beginning of 2007 the band has signed a deal with the Swedish label I Hate Records, who release the “Merciful Angel” album in August 2007. It is comprised of intro ‘MCMXCIX’ and songs ‘Bombs Away’, ‘Afterlife’, ‘Space Eater’, ‘Merciful Angel’, ‘Deceitful Eyes’, ‘Operaphobia’, ‘Overkill’, ‘Death From Below’, ‘The One’.
Space Eater performed on EXIT festival in Novi Sad in 2007, and for the first time played completely new song ‘Crush, Kill, Destroy’ among others from the debut album.
In late 2007 and beginning of 2008 band starts writing new material, and soon new songs came up, ‘Say Your Prayers’, ‘Abort’, ‘F.A.A.’, ‘Up On These Shores’, ‘Quantum Leap’, ‘Divide & Conquer’, ‘No Retreat’.
During 2008 band plays two shows in Bosnia and Herzegovina. First show was in summer on Scream Fest 2 in Ljubuški with other bands from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. Second show was in October in Sarajevo with bands Ormus and Necromentor from Sarajevo; that was the first time Space Eater headlined a show.
In January 2009 Space Eater recorded one cover song ‘Speed Metal Manijak’ for Bombarder tribute release, which is expected in late 2009 or beginning of the 2010. Space Eater is called to open for German thrash metal band Destruction in May and also called to open for Sodom in September in Belgrade/Serbia. Band has recorded the promo version of the second album, which will contain eight new songs ‘Crush, Kill, Destroy’, ‘Say Your Prayers’, ‘Abort’, ‘F.A.A.’, ‘Up On These Shores’, ‘Quantum Leap’, ‘Divide & Conquer’ and ‘No Retreat’, and is currently looking for a label interested to release it.
