About me:
Roy is the drumming force behind
dBass, Glasgow's pioneering jazz fusion ensemble and can often be seen playing live with the band and heard on the band's self-releases "Time Will Tell", "Frantic" and "Qoral Reef".
He is also currently recording an album and performing with
Inspector Tapehead, a much-anticipated three man collaboration with Jonnie Common (Down The Tiny Steps) and Chris Croasdale, to be released in summer 2009.
Roy has recorded and played extensively as a 'Consultant' with gravel-voiced troubadour
Adam Beattie, and was featured on Adam's debut release, "Abu Bozy" (Hijacked Records). He has also been an occasional member of
The Felt Tips, featuring on their single "Lifeskills" (Cloudberry), and for a while did a good impression of a keyboardist for
Bela (Say Dirty). These projects have variously led to performances at venues across the UK, at the renowned Home Game and Knockengorrach festivals and further afield in Norway, Sweden and the Czech Republic.
A regular player on the Glasgow jazz scene, Roy has also managed numerous small releases, co-produced "The NYK Experiment" radio show for Subcity radio, and designs and makes musical instruments. Roy is also an aspiring tabla player, having studied in Assam and Calcutta under Paban Bordoloi and Subrata Manna (Mitu) respectively.
Roy's playing has attracted some attention in the music press:
"raucous drumming" Song, By Toad
"Special mention should also go to the ever-inventive Shearer, whose drum kit included a number of unlikely objects..." Helen Newbery,
gigreviewscotland.net
"Shearer in particular impressed getting sounds from a small kit that did not seem possible." Paul Kerr,
americana-uk.com
On top of this, Roy is a freelance industrial designer as
Zero-waste Design, and a keen urban cyclist. Spherical Roy's real website is at
www.zero-waste.co.uk/thesound, where photos, links and musings can often be found.
