Mike Marcellino, national award winning newspaper reporter, writer & poet, began a career as a songwriter and performance artist in 2007. He first wrote poetry songs in a bunker during mortar and rocket attacks in the Vietnam War, serving as a US Army combat correspondent & photojournalist. In September 2009, Mike recorded "Amelia Earhart, soft silver wings," with a new band, Mike Marcellino with Ensor. "Amelia" was inspired by the courage of fearless aviator Amelia Earhart. In November the band recorded their fifth song, "Bondi beach," to go along with "Las Cruces" and "Walls of Fire." In the band, Mike is joined by Tomas Texino, guitar, composition, production. On a trip to New York City in November, Mike was joined by Brooklyn musician Randall Leddy who played bass guitar, composed and produced "Flatbush." In eight weeks, our band ranks 60th among Top Folk Artists in New York City, and in the top 10% of Folk Artists on ReverbNation's National and Global charts. All songs recorded in St. Augustine Fl, except "Flatbush," recorded in Brooklyn. Mike and Texino recorded "The Walls of Fire" an ode to the courage and sacrifice of soldiers and released it on Veterans Day, November 11th. Mike performs his poetry songs with musicians and bands. In the fall of 2007 in Cleveland, Mike formed his first band, Split Pea/ce with Abe Olvido, multimedia and experimental sound artist, guitar, drum, typewriter, composer. Mike has performed widely in the United States, including Cornelia Street Cafe, Greenwich Village, NYC; Spike Hill, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Gypsy Cafe in Tulsa; Barking Spider Tavern, Macs Backs Books and Visible Voice Books, Cleveland, Baltimore Hostel, Baltimore Md and Creations Coffee, St. Augustine, Fl. In the spring, Mike Marcellino with Ensor plans to release their first album and tour.
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace... Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY
As gospellers have said, Beneath signalling skies, On land dusty to tread, A trough in a stable Was the strawy first-bed Of a divine baby - The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope - There then and here now; The yuletide of goodwill - There then and here now.
In respect of this chance, Beneath bright or dark skies, Faith's the star that we glance Attending Christ's churches And trying to enhance, With singing and ritual, Our God-loving stance.
thanks, mike:) that poem seems to be liked by many yet it was my first and took only a few minutes of just writing what came to mind without edits. it was pretty surprising.
i'm actually on the east coast in maryland but the waves and palm trees are close to my heart. never been to st. augustine but would imagine i'd like it since i understand it's something like the oldest town in florida?
Yeah I don't think there is too much going on, I know a woman in Ormond Beach has a bookstore and runs a writing group, they are slightly well-known too, she even invited me to join, but I never bothered. So I would think Ormond Beach. I am so busy writing and editing my work I just don't have the interest, but I am thinking now for making connections for the Florida writers that write Florida fiction, because in the bigger leagues, like say on twitter, they are mostly publishers dealing with distinct authors, a lot of fantasy, urban stuff, not really florida fiction noir which is kind of what I just completed, my first novel. So....i FORGET THE WOMAN'S NAME BUT i KNOW HER PLACE IS IN ORMOND bEACH, BOOKSTORE.
Some sweet tracks here mike. I havent been doin anyshows since i got back, been trying to get myself set up for going down to the flordia keys this winter. We will have to play a show again though. Maybe you could come down there! heh =D Peace!

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
Thanks so much for the friend request! Were you at the show on Monday? I know you had mentioned in your friend request that you were hoping to come on out... I'll look forward to hearing back from you! ;)
