"I
feel like hell today, we almost slipped away, then a little voice
inside me showed me that we're here to stay, I don't believe in
lies, somehow they burn our lives, then a little voice inside me
showed me through my paralyzing life."
- Sings vocalist Simon Hynes.
Despite
their paralyzing lives, stay is exactly what Star Assassin have
done, gaining thousands upon thousands of loyal fans in the
process. Through years of relentless underground touring the band has won over many an audience with their voracious
performances, clean smacking songs and impassioned lyrics.
After
putting away several EP's and LP's the band left the road to focus
on recording Star Assassin's debut album 'Bleeding To The Circle'.
While the album was being written, there were periods when
vocalist Simon Hynes didn't leave his room in days, frozen deep
down inside himself, weighed upon by troubling thoughts which
would later escape on the record. "Am I alone? Head in the
dark, alone here with all the things I never once wanted to be,
cos in my heart I'm like you, alone here with all the things I
never once wanted feel".
"Bleeding
To The Circle" is an intense album with incredibly well
structured songs that musically and lyrically explore the range of
emotions spewed forth by the band, a journey though anger, love,
betrayal, regret, pain and realization.
Reflecting a darker undertone, the record varies within its degree
of moodiness and will take you places if you dare follow.
The
first single off the album is "Hey Kid", a fast paced
ripping guitar driven hook-filled hit with an ultra accelerated
music video to match. The Australian foursome let fly on
"This Summer" with an aggravated bruising beat, draped
with catchy obese guitar chords and timely vocal riot, as
"Hide" lights the fuse on a potent progressive dynamic
rocket. The world falls into flawless vulnerability throughout
"Head In The Dark's" melodic vocals, soaring strings and
unveiled lyrics. Star Assassin's approach to this record has
broken open new artistic ground for the band to tread, "The
Way" unlocks a forbidding musical landscape of a different
colour, changing up scenery in the melancholy yet hopeful ballad
'Beautiful World" with it's fetching refrain and a hook like
a harpoon. "Beautiful World" is planned for release in
2009 as the bands second single.
Since
forming in 2001 after breaking away from other bands and musical
projects, their home has been on the road touring, with two
brothers in the band, (vocalist Simon Hynes and guitarist Ryan
Hynes), getting on each others nerves and sparking brotherly
quarrels plagued the bands early history, however, learning to
deal with these kinds of pressures and getting it out of their
system earlier on has only served to strengthen their resolve as a
band. "Now we give each other the space we need"
explains Ryan. "Simon and I are brothers and we're very
determined, we've got our very strong points of view".
This strong determination is what fuels Star Assassin's critical
song writing process and delivers that colossal intensity the fans
love to their live stage show.
The
album title "Bleeding To The Circle" derives it's name
from the circle of family, friends and fans who have loyally
followed and supported the band since the beginning. Simon admits "We've
got some pretty hardcore fans." Larcombe agrees "There's
nothing better than seeing your fans sing along, that's what gives
you the motivation, it's brilliant, fans are awesome."
Simon continues "They're really like a second family to
us".
Symbolically
speaking, Star Assassin have bled with their lives to create their
latest offering. Orford explains "You've got to hang in
there because everything doesn't happen overnight, you've got to
put a lot of time and effort into it and there's a lot of things
that can deter you over that time." Ryan adds "We're
paying them back for hanging on for us." Ryan continues "The
album's got a real youthful vibe to it, I remember when we used to
drive in our cars when we were 17 at twilight going to a party and
just have our music going in the car, that's the type of vibe it
gives me."
