One of few guitarists worldwide known to continuously create, perform and produce new, original music based on systematic explorations of the parameter of pitch. And to infuse traditional/popular performance practices with it. Actively live in concert and on a regular basis. Among today's most innovative, original voices on the planet's most popular, most played instruments - The traditional 6-string/12 fret Guitar, Internationally Acclaimed, Award-Winning Phenom New York Guitarist, Bassist, Mandolinist, Live Electronica Performer, Composer and Educator Sten Hostfalt is critically labeled Groundbreaking, Genuinely innovative, Virtuosic and a GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE Editor's
Pick for his live recorded landmark solo concert CD release with original, self-invented techniques
and interpretations of visionary composer, mentor Joe Maneri's 72-note ET virtual pitch continuum.
Currently as a New York bandleader, described as inimitable - there are few musicians like Sten Hostfalt, impressive and intense according to leading and visionary media outlets TIME OUT NY and PM NYC/PAPER MAGAZINE. Following two decades of leading media documented creative work as a sideman alongside leading names in modern music, in pioneering and genre-defining circuits.
Initially self-taught and shaped by an active involvement in the 80's independent new wave and metal/progressive scene. First featured on National Radio at age 15 and dubbed a "Guitar Phenom" in the press as an 18 year-old. The International recognition followed a subsequent move from his native Sweden to the U.S. in 1989, on an Achievement Scholarship from Berklee College of Music.
He then quickly established an international activity through membership in esteemed traditional American orchestras and institutions like Herb Pomeroy's legendary Berklee Recording Band, Phil Wilson's Rainbow Band. As well as as a New England Conservatory scholarship and honors award recipient, with The NEC Big Band directed by Jazz Masters Clare Fischer and George Russell.
Before notably becoming as an original member of and featured soloist in the first edition of celebrated Argentine composer Guillermo Klein's (a key musician of his time - Encyclopedia of Popular Music) pioneering (Eugene Holley, amazon.com) ensemble. A band that as part of a highly innovative NYC circuit, through contributing to establishing the scene and sound of Mitch Borden's Small's, has been referred to as influential to mid-90's to present era improvised music and Jazz.
Through studies and performances with legendary American modern music giants and pioneers Jimmy Giuffre and and Joe Maneri. As well as through recordings produced and/or initiated by legendary Jazz masters Gary Burton and Paul Bley. Notably with his CD releases of microtonal solo live performances gaining recognition for an expansion of the sonic resources and vocabulary of the recent to present era's most popular, most played instrument without actually modifying it.
Also active as a musical educator since the mid-80's, and a veteran teacher with numerous students admitted to top music schools and active as professional musicians and educators themselves. A faculty member of K.M.H. The Royal Conservatory of Music, Kungliga Musikhogskolan in Stockholm from 2001 - 2005. As well as an invited and featured clinican/artist at alma maters New England Conservatory ('92) and Berklee College of Music ('06). The former commonly known for having formulated and realized the world's first conservatory program for Jazz and Improvised Music. And the latter, arguably the world's leading institution for Modern Music Studies. Sten Hostfalt currently teaches guitar, electric bass, mandolin, improvisation, composition, live electronica improvisation, microtonal music and related topics at his very own Midtown Manhattan facility NYC Guitar studio, notably one of very few institutions worldwide offering systematic studies of microtonal music

There are few musicians brave enough to combine live poetry with the toy piano
and the
trombone on-stage but then there are few musicians like Sten Hostfalt. He takes even
more risks with his band GHOST FACTOR, incorporating guest improvisation into each inimitable performance - Xiyin Tang, PAPER MAGAZINE March '07

As opposed to those who utilizes specially refretted guitars, instead using
conventional instruments and obtaining microtones through various other means
In and out of the aural palette in an attractive complexity, Sten Hostfalt
gives you another angle on exploring that you will not want to miss
Intriguing, For those with ears broad enough to allow for the possibility that music
can extend beyond the expected and expand the potent boundaries of experience, Sten Hostfalt takes you on a journey to a place where anything is possible

"Sten Hostfalt has developed his own repertoire incorporating microtones.
Tuning his guitar in intervals of a quarter tone and smaller he pays tribute to the
equally tradition-shattering Giuffre, removing the audience's comfort zone, as he challenges it's combined expectations with a genuinely innovative approach for guitar.
In the
future 29 Pieces for Microtonal Guitar Live at Knitting Factory NY may be considered a
groundbreaking work that expands the sonic continuum available to the guitar."
