Add to My Profile | More Videos I was born in England and my family moved to Australia when I was 10. I was lucky and grew up in Canberra. I joined the ACT Labor Party in 1983. My interests have always revolved around economic and social justice issues.
I moved to Victoria in 1987 and have lived in the west of Melbourne for almost all of that period. I am married and have a beautiful daughter as well as two dogs and a cat.
I’m now the Minister for Broadband, Communications & the Digital Economy. At the moment I’m spending lots of time implementing Labor’s plan to revolutionise Australia’s internet infrastructure by creating a new, high speed, National Broadband network, with connection times up to 40 times faster than current speeds!
Check out Labor's plan for High Speed Broadband!
Representing the Labor Party has been a lifelong ambition. It is the party which is committed to working Australians. Australia is faced with a critical choice in 2007: it can turn inwards and seek to insulate and isolate itself from what is happening in our region and around the world or it can choose to meet the challenges of the new century.
I’m also a passionate member of the Collingwood Football Club and support Chelsea in the English Premier League!

Hi Stephen, congratulations on being appointed Minister for communications, it's brilliant to see Sen Coonan out of her position and very much enlightening to see the ALP with a forward thinking direction to such a vital portfolio in these emerging times... I wish you all the best, and look forward to seeing some well needed reforms and ideas, kind regards, Adrian
Hi Stephen, Congratulations to Labor for winning the 2007 Election by a landslide. After Mike Kelly won Eden Marnario I knew Labor would win by the margin we did. I read that Gavu=in and Jacinta are going weell in the half Senat Election? I voted Labor and when Kevin declared Victory I smiled and though just what Australia needs a Rudd labor Government after 11 and a half years of John Howard. Jason
As per your comments in SMH that a mandatory "clean-feed" internet service for all homes, schools and public computers to filter out banned content would be implemented should ALP gain power.
Does this mean as an adult, I will no longer be able to view content that is perfectly legal, but deemed inappropriate by the ACMA? Or will this Clean Feed be opt-in, the much more sensible solution, where adults can still view content that is inappropriate for children?
With the Howard Government finally getting the fortitude to call an election most likely this Sunday, it is now soever important that all of us are enrolled.
Also ensure everyone you know is enrolled so collectively we can rid this great Nation of this insidious Howard Government.
The ONLY alternative is to vote for a Kevin Rudd Labor Government AND vote 1 above the line on the Senate Ballot for LABOR.
I cannot beleive you are 44! I didn't think you were a day over 35! You are looking fantastic Mr Conroy. May I just say I am a huge fan of yours and I too go for Chelsea. Anyway, see you later, have a good one mate!!
Kevin Rudd isn't my friend so I'm saying this to you- the obvious response to the laughable Lib smear on Rudd's health is for him to challenge Johnny Howard to a game of cricket- cue: endless re-runs of Howard's 'bowling' attempt during that visit to Pakistan. And what was that vision of Costello in a track suit today?! *stunned silence*
Senator Conroy, Kim Beazley,Simon Crean,Mark Latham and Kim Beazley all tried hard. We hope Kevin Rudd,Julia Gillard and team try even harder. Best Wishes.
Thats great Mr Conroy, And i very much hope ypu mean that. Where i live at the moment i can talk to people on my CDMA phone... only just but i can... with the next G phones in the same spot i get service on our farm gets NONE at all. Thanks for the support in rural areas an not being sold out to telstra Cheers, Isaac
Hi Stephen, On a Friday afternoon during the offical Election Campagin Could You, Kevin, Julia, Wayne, Nicola, Kim, Rodney Crocks and the Labor Candidate for Aston pleas come to Knoxbrooke to meet my friends and yell us what labor plans to do for Knoxbrooke when Kevin wins in 2007? GO LABOR! Jason
hey there stephen... just wondering if u can give me a hand in a pre selection in a safe labor seat? look i'll even settle for a safe liberal, i think i'll have enough sway on the local electorate... cheers mate, adrian ;-)
