Check out the World Premiere of the video for Steve's latest single, Moo La Moo, brought to you by our friends at CMT.com. Moo La Moo is a great story about how there's never quite enough cash at the end of the month...sound familiar?
Steve Azar, the soulful Delta-blues rocker, began writing songs at a very early age. As young as four years old, Steve can remember banging on a toy guitar back in Greenville, Mississippi and by the time he was ten, he knew this was a path he would follow for life. Blues artists like Eugene Powell and Sam Chapman, who would play behind his dad’s liquor store, initially influenced Azar. Steve loved their sound so much that he was immediately hooked. By the time he graduated from Delta State University, he was playing 200 shows a year and touring with two 28-foot trucks and 10 men on the payroll. He was regionally successful, but artistically unfulfilled, so he gave it up to become a better songwriter, and moved to Nashville in 1991. Within days after he arrived, Azar was offered three song-publishing deals and later, a major recording contract with Mercury Records.
Azar launched a radio phenomenon with his self-penned hit, "I Don't Have to Be Me ('Til Monday)." The song not only reached 2 on the charts, but also has since received more than three million spins on the radio. His Top 10 hit "Waitin’ On Joe," produced a 1 video on CMT featuring Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman was also nominated for the Country Music Association’s Video of the Year.
Last year, Azar toured across the United States with one of his biggest musical influences, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. The tour was ranked 1 in America by Pollstar Magazine, and was a sell-out in almost every major market, including Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Detroit.
His highly anticipated and roots-rich album, Indianola, was initially available exclusively to fans who attended the Seger tour, but was recently released May 27 on Azar’s Dang/Ride Records and now can be purchased in retail stores nationwide, at digital media outlets, and also on his newly designed website, www.steveazarlive.com.
With years of experience and wisdom behind him, Steve’s music shows a more mature side and he claims that he is much more comfortable with his songwriting.
“This record is about coming of age and growing up. It’s about surviving mistakes and learning from them,” says Azar. “This album is about everything from my life in Nashville to my upbringing in the Mississippi Delta and every person who has inspired me in my life so far – and there a lot of influences inside of me.”
Azar wrote or co-wrote all of the tracks on Indianola, and in addition to producing and engineering the project, he plays most all of the string instruments throughout. “I think this is the best record I’ve ever made.” I have a great team of believers on my side and that’s really all I can ask for.”
In addition to working on a new album, Azar stays busy with a host of other projects. He continuously donates his time and talent to numerous charity events across the country. In 2006, Azar and his wife founded “The Steve Azar St. Cecilia Foundation” to assist charitable organizations in providing aid to disadvantaged, sick and abused children, particularly in the Delta and Nashville areas where he and his family reside.
