After a string of successful shows in the spring of 2009 at various bars, clubs, coffee shops, and campus events, Steve Boller and his talented live band appear poised to take the Midwest music scene by storm. This eager young artist delivers a brand of music full of energy and enthusiasm, instantly infectious and impossible to ignore.
With influences ranging from indie pop/rock acts such as Jason Mraz, Ben Folds, and Guster to barbershop quartets and classical symphonies, the Indiana native and Xavier University music major is bending all the rules. The 20 year old singer-songwriter started writing music as part of an irrepressible need for self-expression in his early teens and hasn’t slowed down since. After years of solo acoustic shows and a string of self-released albums, EPs, and singles, Boller is on the verge of his most substantial and musically impressive project yet: a new EP titled "Feel Just Fine."
“Things just kept falling into place,” Boller says. “Throughout the process I almost felt like I couldn’t afford not to finish these songs. The writing on the wall was too clear.”
Call it fate, providence, or sheer luck, but Xavier University just so happened to host a Battle of the Bands event after Boller had finally made the important steps of securing a personal manager and a band of his very own. The band, formed only a short month before, won the battle by a landslide, riding the momentum of the student body’s popular vote. The prize of recording time at Ultrasuede Studio in Cincinnati enabled Boller to start work on the EP he had always wanted to make. A continuing string of fortunate events allowed for continued re-working and refinement on the songs throughout the summer.
“I really have felt the hand of something bigger than myself guiding me through this whole project,” he says. “My inner demons have been forced to fall aside and the path before me has only become clearer as I have pushed forward. I honestly can’t wait to share these songs with people.”
Long-time fans of Boller’s work will appreciate the continued use of varied instruments and harmonies, including four-part back-up choruses written and sung by Boller himself, acoustic and electric guitars, as well as hand drums, a new musical frontier for Boller. All the songs on “Feel Just Fine” were recorded with congas and djembe, but Boller promises more diversity at shows this Fall.
“I love the different colorful sounds you can get out of the hand drums, but there is just no substitute for the beat of a drum kit that you really feel in your chest. We brought local drummer Walter Piper in to the band and I honestly can’t wait for fans to hear what a drum kit does to some of these songs. It will be fun to incorporate the hand drums in the set and keep that originality while getting people moving on other songs with the kit.”
Despite the focus on musical aesthetics, the lyrical content of “Feel Just Fine” is stronger than ever. The EP’s first single, “Flow,” is a particular highlight.
“Sitting down to write ‘Flow,’ I wanted to write a song that served as a reminder both to myself and others to take life as it comes and move with the current of our experiences instead of constantly fighting against them. I really think people can identify with and connect to this song especially. Everything I write comes from my own experience and I always try and share the thoughts I think others will find most useful in their own lives.”
With an ambitious show schedule planned and a new EP due out in October, Steve Boller is an up and coming artist worth watching for.
