Painkiller is the new solo album by Steve Kilbey, lead singer of The Church, his first in seven years. It is vast and immediate, lyrically intoxicating, musically loose and rocking or spacious and trippy. Painkiller swings from delicate, psychedelic pop songs to radiotronic, space-rock monsters. It stretches song structures and warps your mind through swirling highs and long comedowns. A masterpiece. The pump of sex, the swoon of drug, the struggle of man, a fix for a world in pain.

Out of all of the songs on Painkiller, for some reason "Wolfe" grabs me the most. I don't know what it is. Its always different every time I listen...

Painkiller is a very artistic and well driven space rock album from start to finish. I am so glad that it was recorded and put out for the ears and minds of the masses.
Dont stop!

hey kilby,
Old age is never fun. It presents in an acute form the human predicament: everyone must become neglected, forgotten, or replaced. Of course I am but a minor figure among the pop music kings of the day. I write melodic pop songs with bitter yet uplifting lyrics. In this mind-boggling age of a variety of human types this is a kind of promise of eternal poverty. A number of people have commented on my new David Lynch hairstyle, by this I take it they mean, my short, back and sides with a lot on top. Well, David Lynch is a role model but I'm giving up my hairdresser after this latest travesty. He was cheap, for good reason, the prick. I don't want to become one of those thinning-haired, jowly old rockers who still do the same shtick they did when they were young, slim and beautiful. That's tragic or is it? It’s only tragic because our brains have been conditioned to avoid thinking of death and change of any sort. Do I deserve to do demeaning work? NO! I deserve to be free from tedious trivialities! I am an artist for god sakes! I should be living in an apartment with a Filipino woman that comes every second week to clean and iron my collection of shirts, I inherited from Ross Wilson, but what would be the point? I can’t even work my mobile; I don’t text – which given my flirtatious nature is a good thing. My most recent albums draw on soul, R&B and vintage country and Pop, to create a stylish concoction of my own.
Journalists ask me questions. Commonly, they start with, am I bitter that I’m not more successful, or do I feel like a failure since I get great critical reviews but my sales aren’t massive? I explain that I feel lucky that I get to make music, spend time at home, and read. You must keep in mind that success is a consequence and not a goal. Of course my superannuation is pathetic. I miss it when no one's ringing up to me and asking me what’s happening.
Newspapers and the media generally are now not that influential – in fact they d
