I'm a lucky guy. I have the pleasure of making my living as a songwriter, musician, and educator. Aside from the occasional retail/restaurant gig as a younger person (I think I worked the third shift at Walmart for one night) songs have provided me and mine with a very average middle class lifestyle. If happiness is, as Emerson said, "living the greatest number of good hours", then I have "Made It".
I was born in Tokyo, Japan to a young Air force medic and his new wife, and have been drawn to all things oriental ever since. We moved around a lot. All four kids were born in different states, and I bet I went to four different High Schools. When Jimmy Carter was giving out college loans in the late 70's I grabbed one and went to Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., graduating with a BM in Jazz Studies/Guitar. I always wanted to be a Jazz player, but ended up writing songs with all of those great chords I learned from standards. After college I moved to a town outside of Boston, Mass., and fell in love with New England. I soon froze to death and was starving, so I took up a friend's offer to move to Tallahassee, Florida, where I taught music lessons and played in a great band, The Southern Swing Quartet.
I moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1992..............
The rest is mystery.
I signed as a staff songwriter to EMI Music Publishing in 1994 where I remained for eight years. I have since been an independent publisher/songwriter, minus a short 'stint' at Stage Three Publishing, and am proud to say that my songs have been cut by the likes of Kenny Rogers, George Strait, Neal McCoy, Rhonda Vincent and Mark Chesnutt. I've had over twenty songs on Darryl Worley records (Thanks, again...my friend) and had the honor of receiving a Grammy Award Certificate for the title cut on the 2004 Best Bluegrass Album of the year; Brand New Strings- Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.
I recorded an album of my own, In The Middle, available at CD Baby,iTunes, and the Bluebird Cafe.
It seems that Christmas time is here once again, and it is time again to bring in the New Year. We wish the merriest of Christmas to you and your loved ones, and we wish you happiness and prosperity in the year ahead. Yola
