Although the band is long split, their memory remains...
With their sun-kissed, tropical rock sound that shines brightly through solid songwriting, superb musicianship, a lighthearted island attitude and on-stage antics, Knoxville, Tennessee's St. Somewhere established themselves as one of the premier purveyors of Caribbean-style rock in the U.S.
The four-piece act rode on the driving rhythms of Trinidad & Tobago native Quincy Yeates' steel drums, complemented by guitarist and high-spirited front man, Matt Hall, working within the framework of the collective groove engineered by drummer Kevin Wiley and bassist Aram Takvoryan; all seamlessly sailing along the shores of Island-infected sounds and a variety of musical genres, including reggae, calypso, pop and rock'n'roll; accentuated by the collective vocal offerings of all four members.
Formed in 1997, St. Somewhere came together as a result of a chance encounter between Yeates and Hall at a bar near the campus of the University of Tennessee. Yeates, an acclaimed pianist, vocalist and steel drum player from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad & Tobago, had moved to the United States to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Hall was a singer/songwriter who for years mixed his academic efforts with gigs ranging from a residency at an Irish pub in Chicago to performing acoustically at various venues around Knoxville. Desiring lives as full-time musicians, rather than students, Hall and Yeates seized the opportunity to form the band, bringing together Yeates' Caribbean influences and Hall's singer/songwriter roots and penchant for Jimmy Buffett-style musical flair.
