Superman Curl has been sharing their version of garage pop to energy charged audiences for roughly ten years. They have completed their third release -- a five song "EP". Earlier self-titled and Soundcheck releases were received with great praise. “It’s the pop quotient that distinguishes Superman Curl’s work...basic hooks galore, occasional surf and pysch guitar licks, plus some gleeful singalong choruses” states the Mpls/St. Paul Star Tribune Newspaper. Please see official website for more reviews, press, etc.

CD Review – Superman Curl – EP
Posted on September 4th, 2009
By Brett Reese
Remember in the late 90’s some ska bands sometimes had a more punk sound? Do you miss the bands that appeared on the album “We Are Not Devo?” Did you fall into despair when The Hippos broke up? If so, Superman Curl will fly in and save your day.
Though they refer to themselves as more of a “garage pop” sound their style is consistent with the style of the late 90’s. True to Superman style, you’re now hearing about this EP at almost the last possible moment since it was released in 2008 and is available on the band’s website if you can’t find it anywhere else.
The EP itself is faster than a speeding bullet, but each of the five tracks has a consistent yet diverse style. Each song pulling of daring feats beyond what the previous track had accomplished. “Dressed to the Nines” is a good intro that bounces back and forth between fast and slow. “Back Where You Belong” starts the real action going. It’s a bit faster and sounds like some sort of chimera of The Hippos’ instrumentation and Greenday’s more recent vocals.
“All Across the Nation” leaps higher than a building with a quicker pace and energetic vocals and an unstoppable guitar solo halfway through the song. “Lovin’ Man” is for all the Lois Lanes out there, it’s the one love song that ends up being slower, but often appeared on those late 90’s “punk” albums. It particularly brings to mind a more mature and worldly version of The Aquabats’ “Lovers of Loving Love.” “Best Day” comes in more powerful than the speeding locomotive building steam and momentum and then launches into another great guitar solo.
Superman Curl’s EP is a solid album with some great “garage pop” sounds that recapture the feeling of the late 90’s “punk” bands. The only drawback, like kryptonite, is that it’s so short. For those of you looking to recapture the feeling and style of that time, Superman Curl is the group for you, and if you like it, you can check out their previous albums on their website.
Sounds like: The Aquabats (third album), The Hippos (minus the brass), Greenday, We Are Not Devo
The two-minute pop/punk anthem is alive and kicking, and not just in California. (Superman Curl's) big number is "I Hate Punk Rock," but don’t believe a word of that. Punk’s energetic snarl is at the heart of "Always Say," and punk’s hyperactive bash-and-smash drumming is the prime attraction of "I Said So." The punch drunk-sounding "Cheat & Lie" and "One More Chance" could raise the roofs of bars everywhere ---------

Come grab an advanced copy of the new disc from my fuzzgrunge noisepop band The Sextons, and as always bands, let me know how I can help out with your next tasty record!
This Friday, we are debuting a project called Sonic Transformations. Every month or so we will present a new audio-visual performance based on a different theme/story. We will be collaborating with artists and other creative musicians along the way so let us know if you have something you'd want to bring into this project.
The first in the series is called "AN OBJECT TO CRAVE". Live music and visuals based on a short story about life, love, loss, fantasy, obsession and death.
Another group of mine, The Magnetrons, which plays an exciting and innovative Livetronica set (i.e. STS9, Disco Biscuits, The Histronic) will also be playing. It will be a musical adventure, and we hope that you can come participate :)
Here's the info:
Blood Root Mother - "An Object to Crave" w/ The Magnetrons & Thought Thieves Friday, October 16th Station 4 201 E 4th St St Paul, MN 55101 9pm / $5 / 18+

We will be recording an EP of new music in August, and we recently finished recording a live DVD. The DVD is currently unreleased and I actually just saw it for the first time a few days ago.
