LOUDNESS WAR

Louder is better? Why CDs are reduced in dynamics?

Loudness war - The phrase loudness war (or loudness race) refers to the music industry's tendency to record, produce and broadcast music at progressively increasing levels of loudness each year to create a sound that stands out from others and the previous year.
This phenomenon can be observed in many areas of the music industry, particularly broadcasting and albums released on CD and DVD. In the case of CDs, the war stems from artists' and producers' desires to create CDs that sound as loud as possible or louder than CDs from competing artists or recording labels.
However, as the maximum amplitude of a CD is at a fixed level, the overall loudness can only be increased by reducing the dynamic range. This is done by pushing the lower-level program material higher, while the loudest peak sounds are either destroyed or severely diminished. Certain extreme uses of compression can introduce distortion or clipping to the waveform of the recording.

FIVE RULES TO GET A GOOD RECORD!

1. Know Your Sound, And Be Realistic!
Make sure your producer/engineer understands what sound you want, but keep in mind, they can't exactly reproduce another album's recording conditions for you. Just because your favorite band's drum tracks sound a certain way doesn't mean yours can -- that is, unless you use the same drummer, same kit, same room, same mics, same everything.
Bring to us some examples of styles you'd like to see reflected in your work, and we will explain to you if is possible to reach the same result wiht your project, but remember: individuality IS a good thing!

2. Have Your Songs Prepared!
You and your band should be able to play through every song you plan on recording, and play through it well. Time spent working out arrangements in the studio is valuable time you can be using to add overdubs and other little things to make your songs shine!

3. Always Use New Strings & Heads!
Guitarists & bassists, your recording quality will suffer with old strings so I recomend you put new string before enter in studio!
Drummers should put new Heads and tune the drums in correct tone for the music, I will help you if you need!

4. Let people know you're busy!
You don't want to be called in to work half-way through your session. Everyone involved needs to clear their schedules. Nothing creates more tension in a session than someone wanting to blow out early so they can hit some party. Reserve a few days for the recording sessions, and let us know!

5. Relax!
Recording is fun, and there's really no pressure. Just be prepared, and you'll have a smooth, enjoyable session with a great product at the end!
