MySpace a place for friends

SYNTHASIS versteht sich als Projekt, in dem Künstler und Künstlerinnen verschiedener Gattungen (Musik, Literatur, Malerei, Objekte, Performance) eine Synthese eingehen, um so ein Gesamtkunstwerk entstehen zu lassen, bei dem das Ergebnis mehr ist als die Summe seiner Teile.

SYNTHASIS-Initiator Andreas von Garnier (1960) kam über die elektronische und avantgardistische Musik der 70er Jahre zum aktiven Musizieren. Besonders die frühen Tangerine Dream und Klaus Schulze, Ashra-Temple, Terry Rhiley und die Kulturen übergreifende Synthese verschiedener Musikstile prägten sein Musikverständnis.

Von 1981 bis 1986 spielte er bei Laetare (später Linda-Neutral) -einer Gruppe um den Maler Andreas Wachter- die Musik zur Meditation auf europäischen und außereuropäischen Instrumenten improvisierte, verschiedene elektronische Musikinstrumente, darunter seinen ersten Modulsynthesizer (FORMANT - Nachbau).

Parallel dazu entwickelte er zusammen mit dem Musiker Stephan Hilsberg und dem Schriftsteller Wilfried M. Bonsack von 1984 bis 1989 Text-Musik-Performances, die die gelesenen Texte mit weitgehend frei improvisierten elektronischen Klangcollagen in einen Kontext stellt (CD 'Performance 15. 1. 1989' (SYN004)).

Seit 2001 spielt Andreas von Garnier auch als Solomusiker auf einem computerunterstützten elektronischen Instrumentarium unter anderem auf Vernissagen improvisierte Musik zu den Kunstwerken.

Ebenfalls im Jahr 2001 erschien seine erste CD 'Musik für eine Ausstellung' (SYN001) - Konzertmitschnitt anlässlich einer Vernissage des georgischen Malers und bildenden Künstlers Amiran Kuprawa im Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung Berlin.

Viele neue Impulse brachte die Zusammenarbeit mit Tom Zunk/Ghetto Raga ab September 2003. Hier brachte Andreas von Garnier seine Erfahrungen mit improvisierter avantgardistischer Musik mit dem Anspruch ein, neue Möglichkeiten der Synthese verschiedener musikalischer Formen und Stile zu verwirklichen. Musikalische Differenzen über den Stil und den weiteren Weg der Gruppe führte im November 2004 zur Auflösung der bestehenden festen Besetzung.

Im Mai 2005 führte eine glückliche Fügung zum Kontakt mit Artus Univals CosmicSoundConcept (CSC), einem losen Zusammenschluss vieler verschiedener Musiker, die bei multimedialen Performences frei improvisierte Musik im Spannungsfeld zwischen Rock, Weltmusik und Avantgarde spielen.

Daraus ergab sich für Andreas von Garnier eine sehr fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit mit der Liedermacherin und Sängerin Nic-D aka CorvusCantans und dem Gitarristen, Weltmusiker und Multi-Instrumentalisten Leander Reininghaus aka LEALOOP, die schliesslich zu der Idee zum SYNTASIS-Projekt führte.

Von September 2005 bis April 2006 arbeiteten diese drei Musiker an der Vertonung von Texten und Gedichten des österreichischen Dichters Georg Trakl (1887-1914), siehe auch Werschs Traklseiten, die das komplette Werk, biografisches und wissenschaftliches Material liebevoll aufgearbeitet in deutscher Sprache enthalten. Trakls extrem bildreiche und kontrastierende Sprache ermöglicht eine große Spannweite musikalischen Ausdrucks. Eine CD mit u.a. der Vertonung 'Traum und Umnachtung' ist unter dem Titel 'Erste Begegnungen' (SYN003) bei SYNTHASIS erschienen, weitere Vertonungen sind geplant.

Seit Mai 2006 arbeitet Andreas von Garnier mit der aus Bulgarien stammenden Malerin und Performancekünstlerin Antonia Duende an einem bisher unveröffentlichten Projekt, das Gesänge aus dem Balkan mit elektronischer Musik verbindet (Balkan-Space-Ethno).

Aktuell spielen Leander Reininghaus und Andreas von Garnier teilweise mit Gastmusikern bei verschiedenen Events meist frei Improvisierte Musik im Spannungsfeld zwischen Elektronik/Ambient und Avantgarde/Experimental. Die CD 'Zu Abend mein Herz' (SYN005) mit Live- und Studioimprovisationen dokumentiert den aktuellen Stand.

Zu Beginn des Jahres 2007 begegneten sich Andreas von Garnier und die Malerin Sibylle Tonn, deren Werke teilweise von einer starken, ins Unterbewußte zielenden Symbolik gekennzeichnet sind und für Andreas von Garnier eine große Quelle der Inspiration darstellen. Eine Zusammenarbeit im Rahmen von Vernissagen, Covergestaltung und anderen Projekten ist geplant.

Im Frühsommer 2007 wurden alte Kontakte aus Ghetto-Raga-Zeiten wieder aktiviert: ThomThom Geigenschrei, ein virtuoser E-Geiger, fand sich im Studio zu Sessions ein. Das Ergebnis dieser Arbeit ist ThomThoms Projekt 'TT G(eigen)schreys TTRAUMWANDLER', ein elektronisches Projekt, das elektronisches Equipment mit elektrischer Geige fusioniert.

SYNTHASIS regard themselves as a project in which artists of various fields (coming from music, literature, arts and performance) establish a joint venture, a synthesis, to create a work that contains all their aspects as a whole, hence the result will always be more than just the amount of its parts.

SYNTHASIS' master mind behind, Andreas von Garnier, made his way to the life of an active musician affected by electronic and avant-garde music of the senventies. Especially the early works of TANGERINE DREAM, KLAUS SCHULZE, ASHRA TEMPLE, TERRY RILEY and a cross-cultural understanding of different styles in music were main influences on his approach.

From 1981 to 1986 he was the member of a group named LAETARE (later LINDA-NEUTRAL), musicians around the painter ANDREAS WACHTER's circle of friends, obliged to improvisation on instruments of different cultures, thus creating sounds for meditation, partly on electronic devices, too, among those Andreas' first modulus synthesizer, a FORMANT replica he had built himself.

At the same time, between 1984 and 1989, he was developing text-music-performances, together with the musician STEPHAN HILSBERG and the author WILFRIED M. BONSACK, improvising sound scapes for recited pieces of literature and so forming an aural context.(CD 'Performance 15. 1. 1989' (SYN004)).

Since 2001 Andreas von Garnier is working solo, too; supported by computer and electronic devices he's playing his improvisations at arts exhibitions and openings, inspired by the settings and surroundings he may find there. His CD "Musik für eine Ausstellung" (SYN001), a live-recording on the occasion of the Georgian painter and sculptor AMIRAN KUPRAWA's exhibition at Max-Planck-Institute for Educational Research emerged in the same year.

Much of new input was achieved by a joint venture with TOM ZUNK/GHETTO RAGA since September 2003. Andreas brought in his experience with avant-garde music and improvisation, having in mind a cross-over sound that would blend all the different styles they represented, yet they could not find a sufficient compromise on how to proceed in music in the long run, so the project split up in November 2004.

In May 2005 a lucky coincidence led to a meeting with ARTUS UNIVAL's COSMIC SOUND CONCEPT (CSC), a loose formation of various musicians and performance artists, who improvised together, using beamers and visual effects, all kinds of instruments, and in this way working together within the range of world music and avant-garde.

On one of these occasions Andreas met with singer/song writer NIC-D aka CORVUSCANTANS and guitarist, world musician and multi instrumentalist LEANDER REININGHAUS aka LEALOOP; they got along well and their improvisations inspired Andreas to form SYNTHASIS and develop his ideas.

In September 2005 they started working on Andreas' vision of a sound collage for the texts and poems of the Austrian expressionist poet GEORG TRAKL (please, look at WERSCHS TRAKLSEITEN, where you will find his complete works and additional material, very caringly collected, in German language.) TRAKL's highly visual and contrasting words supply a broad range of musical expression. A CD with the musical version of "Traum und Umnachtung" and others has been completed so far and is available at SYNTHASIS' site. Other musical projects are coming up soon.

Moreover, since May 2006 Andreas von Garnier has been working together with ANTONIA DUENDE, a Bulgarian painter and performance artist, to present songs and chants from the Balkans in a fusion with electronic music (Balkan-Space-Ethno).

Currently Andreas and LEALOOP are playing their improvisational musical sound scapes for different occasions and events, sometimes joined by other musicians, too. The CD "Zu Abend mein Herz" (SYN005) with recordings of live and studio improvisation show their recent status quo in the flow of this process.
