TKD Times is receiving many questions on the upcoming Hanmadang in Anaheim, California, on July 16-20 of this year. With so many people asking so many questions and the deadline for participation just recently extended, TKD Times has sent questions regarding the controversial event to the following organizations to try and get some answers for our readers and TKD players everywhere:
* United States Taekwondo Federation (USTF)—the private organization chosen by the Kukkiwon to host the first-ever Hanmadang in the U.S.
* Kukkiwon—presenter of the Hanmadang in the Korea for the last 17 years.
* World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)—the largest TKD federation representing Olympic-style TKD.
* USA Taekwondo (USAT)—the nationally-recognized governing body of TKD in the U.S.
* The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of the Republic of Korea
We will post the responses as we get them from each organization to give you the most up-to-date information on the event. If any organization declines to comment—we will post that information as well.
Questions:
1. After 17 years of holding the Hanmadang in Korea—the motherland of TKD, why move it to the U.S. for 2008?
2. Previously, Hanmadang has only been a festival open to black belts only, but this year white belts on up are included—why? Is this to attract more participants and gather more funds?
3. Many people are saying Hanmadang was moved to the U.S. for 2008 to bring in more money—is this true or do you think it is true?
4. It is being speculated that with the controversy of moving Hanmadang to the U.S. for 2008 and the choosing of a private organization, the USTF, to host the festival, that many participants will not be coming this year and will be boycotting the event—is this something that is of concern?
5. The deadline for registration was just recently extended, how many participants are signed up currently? How many will there need to be to make Hanmadang a success in the U.S.?
6. With the controversy of Sang Lee, the current president of the USTF, being ousted from the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU), now known as the USAT, by the United States Olympic Committee—why would the Kukkiwon choose the USTF organization to host such a revered festival, especially over the current governing body of TKD—the USAT?

This is the perfect example of why the USCDKA is no longer allowing teenage masters. They have realized that young masters are not mature enough to comprehend complex subject matter and that they are also easily swayed by personal opinion. Further more this is not about brotherly love. This is an issue of Isaac and Ishmael – the son of promise vs. the son of human error.
