Taiko Masala is a Brooklyn based Taiko drumming group. The group was founded in 2000 by Hiro Kurashima, a Shihan Master of Suwa style Taiko who studied under Grand Master Daihachi Oguchi of Suwa Daiko. Taiko Masala is the only Taiko group based in Brooklyn. Currently the group has members from various places in Japan, the United States and Europe. Taiko Masala is also sometimes joined on stage by Taiko Masala member Jim Nyoraku Schlefer, master of the Shakuhachi and Aki Kasuga on the Japanese Flute. Additionally Taiko Masala's drumming is also complimented by the Martial Arts and Dancing of Kei Yokayama and Ai Ikeda of Spinnin Ronin.
Taiko Masala has just released it's first CD entitled "Ibuki", recorded in the caverns of the Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale, NY.
Taiko Masala plays a combination of traditional Taiko pieces and orginal compositions by Hiro Kurashima and other members. Taiko Masala proudly builds all their drums from scratch.
