Unchain Yourself. Support Your Local Independent Bookstore!
....
I am an independent, home-grown, woman-owned bookstore established in 1971 in a tiny storefront on Second Avenue in the Cherry Creek district of Denver. I now have three greater Denver locations, each averaging 25,000 square feet, and each with a distinct personality. No cookie-cutter stores for me.
In the historic Lower Downtown area I am housed in the old 19th-century western mercantile founded by C.S. Morey. It is two floors of pure, sweet books and magazines and literary sidelines.
On Colfax Avenue, once the main thoroughfare through Denver before superhighways rerouted traffic, I am housed in the historic, art-deco-style Bonfils-Lowenstein Theater, where Denver enjoyed live productions, ballet, and cabaret from the 1950s through the mid-80s. The Colfax store has preserved much of the theatrical history and look of the former playhouse.
In Highlands Ranch, south of the city, I've hung up my spurs at what was once a working Colorado cattle ranch, now a sprawling suburban community, accessible to downtown by lightrail. Located in the Highlands Ranch Town Center, I'm in a spanking new building, who's interior charm is not even slightly diminished by my exterior modernity.
I have an internet cafe and a world-class newsstand at each location, with antique sofas and overstuffed chairs and quiet nooks galore to encourage lounging and browsing. Authors both famous and not-yet famous pass through my doors, along with celebrities, politicians, and ordinary booklovers of every shape and size. In short, I am the bookstore of your dreams.

Below, listen to Dr. Pius Kamau read his essay at Tattered Cover from the book THIS I BELIEVE, featuring Dan Gediman, the executive producer of NPR's series by the same name.
Many renowned contributors including Isabel Allende, Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, William F. Buckley, Jr., Penn Jillette, Bill Gates, and John Updike make this book a stirring and provocative trip inside the minds and hearts of a diverse group of people whose beliefs, and the incredibly varied ways in which they choose to express them, reveal the American spirit at its best.
Before coming to the U.S. in 1971, Dr. Pius Kamau studied medicine in Spain, England and his native Kenya. A thoracic and general surgeon, Kamau also writes a column for the Denver Post. He is currently organizing a medical group to work in Sudan.

(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare;
Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls;
The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees,
Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham;
Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...
Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
