About me:
Born in America and Raised in Canada into a fighting family, Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn personifies what many would refer to as a graduate from the "School of Hard Knocks". His life has been one struggle after another, but through it all he has maintained a solid belief in himself and persevered against all odds. Very early on, Bobby was introduced to boxing as his first and only sport. It soon became a lifestyle. He started boxing at the tender young age of 6 and has been in the ring fighting ever since. Growing up, Bobby lived a truly nomadic lifestyle, traveling and residing all over the US and Canada. Bobby was a very successful amateur and won many tournaments.
Bobby Gunn's professional career began in 1989 as a Junior Middleweight and after 4 short years he was a very respectable 11-2 with 8 knockouts. He was able to avenge an early loss to Sergio Garcia by way of knockout and he appeared to be headed for a successful professional boxing career. In addition, he defeated the well regarded Kirino Garcia, who fought for and won many titles.
Bobby also was fortunate enough to be invited into camps of World Champions including Iran Barkley, Michael Nunn, Julian Jackson, Mike McCallum, Marlon Starling and Virgil Hill. However, personal issues and injuries would lead to an extended absence from the professional ring. His mother, Jacqueline, passed away shortly after his last fight in 1993 and this proved to be a most trying time for the young Bobby Gunn.
Bobby's mother was the driving force and motivator behind his boxing and with her gone he found it hard to continue. As he began to heal from the loss of his mother, he suffered a near career ending injury when he fell from a ladder while painting a house. His ankle was shattered and it did not completely heal for more than a year. Through these most challenging times, Bobby continued to train as he had done for the better part of his life.
Fast-forward to 2004 and the former Junior Middleweight matured into a solid Cruiserweight. Instead of cutting weight, starving himself and fighting weak, Bobby decided that he would fight at his natural weight in what he referred to as his "second" professional boxing career. It proved to be a smart move. Bobby quickly improved his professional ledger to 16-2 with 13 knockouts and in the process and won the IBA World Cruiserweight Title, NABC Americas Cruiserweight Title, the WBE Cruiserweight World Title He has worked his way into the Cruiserweight World Rankings of the most prestigious sanctioning bodies in boxing, namely being ranked at #14 by the WBC and #15 by the WBO. The Canadian Boxing Federation also recognizes Bobby Gunn as the #1 Cruiserweight in Canada; Irish Boxing ranks him as the #1 Cruiserweight in Ireland; he is ranked at #9 by the NABA and #10 by Trans American Boxing.
On April 7th, 2007 in front of 35,000 people, Bobby fought hard hitting Enzo Maccarinelli for the WBO Cruiserweight Title. The fight was controversially stopped during the first round as the referee halted the contest due to a cut on Bobby's nose. Only two months after losing to Maccarinelli, a hungry and focused Gunn scored a first round knockout in Springfield, Virginia.
On April 7 2007, Gunn blasted out Benito Fernandez in two rounds. Gunn took out the experienced veteran faster than world champions Antonio Tarver (who needed 3 rounds), Troy Waters (9) and Buster Drayton (6). While Gunn’s performance was impressive, his post fight deed gave him major recognition in the boxing community.
Following the fight, Gunn donated a percentage of his purse to legendary warrior Iran Barkley. Barkley, a former three division world champion, brought a young Bobby Gunn into his training camp as a sparring partner for his upcoming fight with Darrin Van Horn. Even while some of the most successful fighters today have not donated to needy fighters who paved the way for them, Gunn didn’t think twice about helping a friend in desperate need. On March 22nd 2008, Gunn was held to a controversial draw against Cory Phelps in a fight that was changed from ten to six rounds at the last minute as his left eye socket was fractured from a headbutt by his opponent. Gunn finished the fight strong and showed a true warrior mentality. The draw with Gunn sprung Phelps into a title shot with Alexander Frenkel, one of the top young fighters in the cruiserweight division.
On July 11th 2008, Bobby earned the IBC International and WBF Americas Cruiserweight Titles by stopping veteran James Morrow in the fifth round. Gunn was the main event of a highly publicized card that featured a fight between former MLB MVP Jose Canseco and NFL Pro Bowler Vai Sikahema.
On November 20th 2008, Gunn earned the redemption he had been seeking for 2 ½ years. Gunn dominated Shelby Gross en route to a third round TKO while winning the highly touted WBC USNBC Cruiserweight title in the process. The rematch had been long overdue, as Gunn and Gross fought to a highly publicized, recognized, and controversial no contest on March 31st 2006.
On February 25th 2009, Gunn stopped Brad Gregory in four one-sided rounds to win the well respected WBA-NABA Cruiserweight crown. The victory made Gunn a 7 time cruiserweight champion.
With the fans and media writing him off as a serious challenger, Gunn stepped into the ring July 11 with IBF/Ring Magazine Cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek. Gunn silenced even his harshest critics, hitting Adamek with many respectable punches while showing a tremendous chin. Gunn took a plethora of heavy shots from the cement fisted Pole but never went down, staying on his feet against the same fighter who decked world champions Steve Cunningham, O'Neil Bell and Chad Dawson.
Gunn's night was controversially cut short following the fourth round when the ringside doctor stopped the bout against the advice of the referee due to a cut on the Celtic Warrior's nose. Gunn's admirable effort earned him a ton from everyone in boxing, including Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, who announced live on TV that he believed the bout was stopped early.
His current record stands at 21-4-1 (18 KO's). Gunn is trained by Aroz “Terrific” Gist, who also trains world champion Kendall Holt. His cut man is Mike Hopper.
Team Gunn's attorney is George Kokkalenios.
