Come al solito e per fortuna la rivista, rigorosamente in inglese, comprende tantissimi articoli e approfondimenti sulla scena garage beat inglese sixties con tra gli altri, l’intervista a Chris White degli Zombies, con gli Mike Stuart Spann, approfondimenti sui gruppi minori come The Penny Peeps, un articolo sul rapporto Yarbirds/Led Zeppelin a cura di Will Shade che intervista e narra la storia di Jake Holmes, penna misconosciuta dell’hit zeppeliniano Dazed And Confused. E ancora un salto nella storia musicale degli Usa con approfondita intervista a Larry Tamblyn della grandissima formazione garage Standells; una monografia dedicata agli United States Of America formazione picaresca di rock psichedelico americano degli anni sessanta. E inoltre la storia con annessa intervista a Michael Erlewine, attuale redattore di Guitar Player e membro dei Prime Movers, band beat attiva nei sixities che annoverava nella formazione un imberbe James Osterberg, compito musicista in erba prima del cambio di pelle nell’iguana Iggy Pop. Misty Lane is one of the greatest magazines left around dedicated to garage punk. Its editor, Massimo Del Pozzo, who is also well known by the Italian garage / beat / folk band, the Others, has managed to continue for several years the fine tradition of editing Misty Lane and we have to be grateful for his achievement. In this issue, Mass dedicates his magazine to Electric Prunes, Animals, 13th Floor Elevators, Kinks and other fab 60s bands plus also to Trashmonkeys, Indikation, Maggots, Ultra V, Girl Trouble and many other current garage bands. With the mag you will get for free the second volume of ‘Today Is Just Tomorrow’s Yesterday’ CD which includes some 60s gems plus fab unreleased tracks of the todays garage scene like the Maggots – ‘I Wanna Score’ (!!!), the Lost Movements – ‘Cry For You’, the No Counts – Ain’t Nothing’, the Monocaines – ‘Back In My Arms’, the Cavemen – Il Buio E’ Tra Di Noi’ (grrrrrrreat name, grrrrrreat song and wylde fuzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!) and more! MISTY LANE #18 + Free CD "Today's Just Tomorrow's Yesterday Vol. 1" (SOLD OUT!!!) I remember Misty Lane when it was an Italian-language-only photocopied 'zine indebted to neo-garage bands and B-Movie mayhem-a similar approach which I took with Gravedigger. Many years have passed and #18 is a stunner. (It's the first issue in a few years due to Massimo's time and effort having been taken up by the Misty Lane record label). Housed in a colour sleeve and featuring a stunning 134 pages this is a treat for garage lovers. Great pieces on Sky Saxon and The Lemon Drops made me pull out records by both bands (a clear sign that the writing has struck a major chord with the reader). There're decent Fuzztones related tales via a career overview of Protrudi's bubblegum punks Tina Peel and an in depth history of ex-Outta Place and current 'tone Andre Kusten's R&R tainted life; Patrick Lundborg's teen recollections of the '80s Stockholm garage explosion is an exceptional account that I'm sure will register with the rest of us bitten by the mop top and cool thread bug at a tender age; Jeff Connolly extols his incurable record collecting addiction, and there're brilliant interviews with the likes of major players The Remains and The Leaves, cult heroes The Bold and Terry Rae, and lesser knowns The Guilloteens, Tol-Puddle Martyrs, Tonto & The Renegades, The Bojax and The Bachs. All in all it's a mightily impressive effort, only let down by some missed opportunities. The Yardbirds interview should have been so much better. The: When did you form? What music do you like? Do you like new garage? questions posed to the current roster of bands interviewed are repeated again and again and do become tiresome. It could be politely said too that the regular typos and errors could have so easily been rectified if proofread by a native English speaking contributor. The minor flaws however have done little to tarnish an otherwise faultless magazine. On the plus side, the free CD, which is full to the brim with 28 top Misty Lane related tracks (featuring many of the bands covered in the magazine) more than make up for what little shortcomings there are! If other magazines are getting more and more open to a greater variety of music (which I must say not everyone is interested in) Misty Lane is definitely the first port of call for authentic GARAGE. Sono passati tre o quatto annetti, ci dice nell’introduzione l’editore di questa rivista, tale Massimo Del Pozzo, fondatore dell’associazione che le dà il nome (eccovi l’indirizzo del sito, così non protestate dicendovi che non vi forniamo tutte le informazioni: www.Misty Lane.it), ma l’attesa sinceramente e fortunatamente viene ripagata benissimo, anzi ce ne fossero.... Basta sfogliare cotale numero 18, malloppone di ben 132 pagine/manoscritto miniato, di sopraffine musica garage rock ‘60 e dintorni per accorgersene e felicitarsene, etc. etc. L’uscita in questione risulta semplicemente ben fatta, accostabile per intenti e riuscita (senza tema di dire una castroneria) al mitico ‘Maximum Rock’ N’Roll’ storica bibbia americana punk/annessi e connessi, con la copertina caleidoscopio colorato immerso in acque/colori piacevolmente garagistiche/i e non solo, piena di nomi che preannunciano interviste che ritroviamo all’interno in perfetto scritto/stile inglese agli storici e fondamentali Yardbirds (se qualcuno di voi weblettori di Kathodik è pronto a contraddire l’affermazione precedentemente esposta, dopo l’estrema unzione si consiglia visita al sito AMG e conseguente corsa con il volto abbassato e in religioso silenzio dal vostro negoziante di fiducia. Se questo non basta datevi all’ippica virtuale) e Remais, come anche Outta Place e gli italici Sick Rose, oppure articoli sul beat italiano degli esordi, su Peter Sellers e Mary Quant, segno di visione non solo musicale ma aperta a tutto ciò che costituiva e costituisce, grazie al lavoro di Massimo e del suo prezioso staff, il mondo dei favolosi anni sessanta (e anta e anta e anta ancora e ancora, perché e leggendo Misty Lane ne abbiamo la prova, c’è anche chi invecchia bene sia musicalmente che “testualmente=cerebro”, e poi non dite che il suono non è l’elisir dell’eterna giovinezza!). Come se non bastasse moltissime recensioni e allegato un cd di ben 28 pezzi di gruppi garage, beat, rock’n’roll nel cuore e nell’anima, ideale introduzione a chi voglia, anzi deve, iniziare a familiarizzarsi con il genere, con la G maiuscola. The 7" EP Given away with this issue features 1966 live recordings from Rudi Protrudi (Fuzztones)'s first band, THE KING ARTHUR'S QUART. Includes two originals, "They're Gonna Take You Away" and "She's Got A..." which would later become "It Came In The Mail" and "Brand New Man." Rudi later released an entire CD from this live session, with added bonus track, "Bandit," a live version of his second band's only original (which later became "Fabian Lips" by Tina Peel, and even later by The Fuzztones as "Highway 69"), recorded in 1967.

Misty Lane nasce nel 1989 come una garage fanzine alla ricerca di oscure realtà musicali sixties e contemporanee. Edita dall'appassionato giornalista e musicista Massimo del Pozzo,la fanzine resta nell'underground per alcuni anni,venendo stampata e distribuita solo in Italia,in poche centinaia di copie. Dalla sua nascita il marchio Misty Lane viene apposto su numerosi demo tape realizzati dalla band romana The Others e su alcune compilazioni allegate alla fanzine .
Per anni Misty Lane viene realizzata completamente a mano..."Primitive,that's how we live!.." e molte delle copertine vengono affidate al disegnatore Canadese Darren Merinuk,che collaborerà anche in occasione di numerose produzioni discografiche dell'etichetta.
La svolta tipografica avviene verso la metà degli anni novanta. Misty Lane diventa a tutti gli effetti una rivista,cui viene allegato per alcuni numeri un supporto in vinile. A partire dal 2003 Misty Lane, con la sua compilazione-CD allegata, viene considerata a pieno titolo una rivista specializzata di ottimo livello. Recensioni entusiastiche la danno tra le migliori a livello mondiale assieme alla Storica Ugly Things di Mike Stax e Shindig di Jon ‘Mojo' Mills. Misty Lane magazine con il suo CD allegato (una sorta di guida sonora alla lettura del magazine,interamente scritto in inglese) raggiunge quota 6000 copie con distribuzione mondiale attraverso canali di librerie e negozi di import.Il numero 21 della rivista sale a quota 8.000 copie. Dal prossimo numero (#22, 10.000 copie) dovrebbe finalmente essere presente sul circuito nazionale anche attraverso le librerie Feltrinelli.
Dal 1989 ad oggi Misty Lane contrassegna più di centocinquanta produzioni,tra demo-tapes , vinili e CD,divenendo a tutti gli effetti un'etichetta storica nel settore sixties. Le produzioni discografiche di band contemporanee (per lo più in formato 45 giri) realizzate sino al 1997 lasciano il posto ad una serie di ristampe di oscuro materiale discografico dei sixties , e per l'occasione viene creato il nuovo marchio Teen Sound Records che sostituirà Misty Lane nelle produzioni di gruppi ‘moderni'. La produzione di vinile continua, affiancata da una necessaria realizzazione in CD di tutti i nuovi lavori. La cura della veste grafica e del suono sono i punti di forza delle produzioni Misty Lane / Teen Sound,acclamate all'estero come tra le migliori all'interno della scena sixties e neo-sixties.
Dal 1999 Misty Lane diviene un'Associazione Culturale, organizzando eventi e partecipando attivamente a festival, fiere del disco,concerti e manifestazioni legate in qualche modo alla cultura degli anni sessanta.
Nel 2000 festeggia il primo decennio pieno di attività con il Festival EXPO 2000 portando per la prima volta in Europa i leggendari Chocolate Watchband (autori del brano Expo 2000,appunto) per una kermesse che presenta al Club La Palma a Roma oltre 10 gruppi italiani; personaggi di spicco della scena garage americana come Rudi Protrudi (Fuzztones) e Craig Moore (Gonn), che si alternano sul palco assieme ai romani The Others capitanati da Massimo Del Pozzo; gli scozzesi Thanes, alfieri del più puro Beat sound revival a partire dalla prima metà degli anni ottanta. La manifestazione riscuote successo a riprova che le attività fin ad allora svolte hanno creato un solido circuito di interesse.
Nel giugno del 2008 una nuova edizione del Festival viene realizzata a Cattolica, con la partecipazione di: Los Immediatos,Strange Flowers, Tony Borlotti e i suoi Flauers, Bradipos IV, Narcotics, Cavemen, I Ganzi..e le selezioni di alcuni dei più noti DJ italiani del settore (Mychael Myers,Dave Masoch,Moreno Spirogi, Max Galli, massimo del Pozzo ed il team del Cloud 9..)
A 20 anni dalla sua nascita Misty Lane continua le sue febbrili attività, operando anche come distributore di piccole etichette discografiche di culto; con il suo fornito Mailorder specializzato in Garage, Beat, Freakbeat, Mod,R'n'R, Lounge, Northern soul, Funky,Powerpop ecc...

Parole sante,e non perchè chi le ha scritte (Luca Frazzi,Rumore),si riferisse ad un 'opera pia o qualcosa del genere,ma piuttosto perchè occuparsi di Musica in questo Paese, sopratutto nel caso di realtà indipendenti come l'etichetta discografica MISTY LANE,sembra a volte un'impresa folle,da martiri dimenticati,quasi;Forse in fondo lo è davvero,ma questo rende il tutto più...eccitante.A volte,perlomeno. Se dovessimo però scegliere qualcosa di indiscutibilmente eccitante in questa strana storia,beh,il "titolo" andrebbe di sicuro alle produzioni che da quasi diciotto anni le etichette di Massimo Del Pozzo sfornano senza sosta:TEEN SOUND RECORDS, con gruppi moderni provenienti da tutto il mondo(Grecia,Inghilterra,Italia,Norvegia,Stati Uniti,ecc.),che si rifanno al "Sixties Boom" con spirito sempre fedele e allo stesso tempo profondamente originale;MISTY LANE RECORDS,appunto,con tante ristampe e raccolte di livello assoluto (Dovers su tutti). Questo mese dedichiamo lla nostra attenzione ad una singola etichetta che da venti anni tiene alto il vessillo della musica e della cultura Sixties nel nostro paese: la Misty Lane. E’, infatti, dal 1989 che Massimo Del Pozzo svolge un ruolo da prime mover della scena garage-beat europea, con i suoi vari gruppi (The Others, su tutti), con la bella rivista Misty Lane (da poco giunta al n. 21) e attraverso le innumerevoli produzioni dell’omonima etichetta. Da qualche stagione a questa parte la label romana si è sdoppiata: da un lato lo storico marchio Misty Lane continua un prezioso lavoro di ricerca di oscure formazioni garage, beat e folk degli anni Sessanta; dall’altro la più ‘giovane’ Teen Sound si occupa di documentare l’attuale scena neo-Sixties.

MISTY LANE - THE SIXTIES APPRECIATION SOCIETY

E' da tempo che volevo scrivere di Massimo del Pozzo, probabilmente il più grande conoscitore italiano di Garage Music e di Sixties con base a Roma, e della sua Misty Lane, The Sixties Appreciation Society fondata nel 1989.
Massimo é davvero un personaggio poliedrico dal punto di vista musicale: scrive da sempre di sixties/garage, la sua gloriosa fanzine Misty Lane partita nei tardi '80 in veste fotocopiata é oggi un elegante magazine in lingua inglese dalla scadenza variabile , ha dato vita a ben due etichette discografiche, la Misty Lane Records e la Teen Sound Records per la quale incidono artisti e bands italiani ed estere, curando una rigorosa produzione di vinili ( in perfetta aderenza con l'estetica sixties) con la fondamentale collaborazione dell'engineer Claudio Bartolucci e dei Delta Studio romani ed occupandosi della grafica, liner-notes etc..tutto quanto insomma riguardante i preziosi documenti sonori. L'attuale catalogo NowSound della Misty Lane é comunque fornitissimo anche di ristampe di numerose etichette da tutto il mondo di '60 - '70 - '80 releases punk, garage, mod, sixties, rock&roll...davvero una miniera inesauribile di pepite d'oro!
Tutto questo presuppone una fittissima rete di contatti internazionali che Massimo ha tessuto senza requie sin dagli anni '80 ma intensificatasi notevolmente nella decade successiva: tra i suoi frutti anche l'organizzazione del Misty Lane Festival-Expo 2000 con ospiti tra gli altri Chocolate Watchband, e Thanes ( ne é stato tratto un prezioso e.p. uscito nel 2.000).
Last..but not least, Massimo ha da sempre un suo gruppo garage punk (con accenti folksy), THE OTHERS, nel quale suona chitarra/armonica/organo e canta: la band ha realizzato quattro lp e numerose altre incisioni ed é tra i pochi garage-acts italiani ad essere conosciuti ed apprezzati all'estero!
Una vita dedicata al garage insomma quella di Massimo: senza ombra di dubbio, ma per approfondire il discorso vi rimando all'intervista che realizzerò tra breve con lui e che apparirà su questo sito. In questa prima parte che Raw And Dirty dedica alla Misty Lane Association vorrei parlarvi di alcuni tra i più recenti ed interessanti E.P.s (uno dei suoi formati preferiti ) usciti tra il 2000 ed il 2002 per la Teen Sound Records, il marchio affiliato alla Misty Lane.
TEEN SOUND RECORDS---Gli E.P. pubblicati tra il 2000 ed il 2002
( Fuzztones, Giljoteens, Frantic V, Poets, Bang !, E-Types.....)
Il recente gioiello più fulgido della Teen Sound é di certo l'e.p. Help, Murder, Police (2001), tre brani dei redivivi e combattivi FUZZTONES con l'originaria tastierista Deb O'Nair al fianco dello stagionato stallone Rudi Protrudi: oltre al polemico brano omonimo dedicato al Los Angeles Police Department una cover selvaggia ed eccezionale di Out Of Our Tree, garage-anthem degli antesignani garage-punkers del north-west americano Wailers scritto nei profondissimi sixties... si ricorda comunque un'altrettanto storica e rude cover dei DMZ; infine l'abrasivo Brand New Man, brano scritto da Protrudi affetto da una vena ancora freschissima.
Imperdibile The State I'm In (2001), quattro brani degli svedesi The GILJOTEENS capitanati dal passionario vocalist Sebastian Braun e caratterizzati dal fluorescente farfisa organ di Johan Grimlund: presentati dal decano del garage svedese Jens Lindberg quale '..the best new garage-group in the world' sanno passare dal fiero piglio garage di Make Up Your Mind e The State I'm In alla poesia autunnale di The Summer Was Gone. Restando in Svezia prezioso é JENS LINDBERG Meets The STROLLERS (2.000), che vede l'ormai disciolta band nell'estemporaneo ruolo di backing-band di un rappresentante storico del garage svedese anni '80 , Jens Lindberg ( Wylde Mammoths,Crimson Shadows, Stomachmouths).
Le tre songs contenute, Anything right, I'm Trough ed Evening star sono ballate garage dal prezioso fascino crepuscolare, composte da Jens e Jennifer Lindberg: caratterizzate dalla voce carismatica di Jens e dai soffici-avvolgenti movimenti/riffs dell'organo di Henrick Wind e della chitarra di Mathias Lilja. Sempre del 2000 il documento in vinile tratto dal Misty Lane Fest-Expo 2000 cui accennavo sopra.
CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND, una delle massime espressione del più puro garage-punk-nuggets americano nei '60, ennesimo incredibile ripescaggio del mitico Massimo, non potevano che presentare una versione alternativa della storica Let's Talk About Girls (dei Grodes), con approccio naturalmente più greve....vorrei vedere!
Completano l'e.p. valide esibizioni dei romani folk-punkers TYME SOCIETY, dei veterani scozzesi beat The THANES e degli italiani ROOKIES...quattro brani per ricordare la due-giorni in futuro!
A proposito dei ROOKIES notevole l'e.p. Anyhow Anywhere (2000) intitolato ad una riuscita cover degli Squires: Giovanni è un vocalist penetrante ed il sound del gruppo di Pavia é impreziosito in Outside Chance dalla viola di Lucia, ma tutti i quattro brani contenuti sono eseguiti con autentica passione garage. L'ultima scoperta italiana di Massimo del Pozzo sono invece The POETS, un trio bolognese dedito a sonorità english-beat melodiche i cui maestri dichiarati sono Beatles e Kinks.
Il loro four-songs uscito nel 2001, When You Were By My Side é completamente originale e fresco come l'acqua sorgiva ed ha preceduto l'appena uscito Lp Surrealistic Rain sempre su Teen S.R.
Meravigliose melodie e beat di stampo beatlesiano anche per l'EP degli americani E-TYPES che nel 1968 siglarono un album meraviglioso e dolcissimo, 'Introducing the E-Types', ristampato anni dopo dalla francese Eva R.
A distanza di 30 anni e sull'onda del successo ottenuto dalla ristampa della label newyorkese Sundazed del loro vecchio materiale tre quinti della band originaria con a capo il lead vocal/guitar Bob Wence ha inciso delle nuove songs...molto simili al loro sound di sempre.
I'll Be On My Way é una cover di un vecchio brano dei Beatles ed é nostalgia pura per le nostre vecchie orecchie...il resto dell'e.p. della Teen é sullo stesso livello, revival di alta classe!
I gruppi che si possono ascoltare su Teen Sound vengono dai paesi più inaspettati: l'avreste mai immaginato che uno dei più gruppi più divertenti/eccitanti che io abbia ascoltato di recente potessero venire dalla Grecia?: sono The FRANTIC FIVE e il recentissimo mini-lp It's Frantic Time!(2002) riporta otto brani incisi nel '98 a Thessaloniki; il loro 'fun garage shake a go-go' come l'ha definito Massimo ricorda molto strumentalmente il tiro dei Fleshtones soprattutto per l'uso delle percussioni del vocalist Chris Kyriazis e l'onnipresente avventuroso Farfisa Organ di Sakis Kyriazis (parenti?).
Eccitante lo strumentale finale Wrong Guy e coinvolgenti le originali I've been a Fool, She ain't You sino alle due indovinate cover, I Missed My Cloud e soprattutto la tirata I Gotta be Goin' (The Playgue). Ma il prodotto più originale, a mio parere viene dai francesi mod-freakbeat-garage BANG ! che siglano nel loro Teen S.R. e.p. (2002) tre brani davvero incredibili, Wild Blood, oscuro e psichedelico, a firma Fowley ( il celeberrimo Kim!) e due originali, Cousin Clyde ed Unknown Band, attraversati dai grotteschi effetti elettronici di Fab Ubu e dalla batteria caracollante Keith Moon-style di Ricky. Sì, perché i Bang! sembrano dei cloni degli Who del periodo d'oro di meravigliosi brani/45 giri come Happy Jack, Pictures Of Lily...meravigliosa demenza giovanile! A quando un lp?
Per il momento ci fermiamo qui...nei prossimi appuntamenti con la Misty Lane ci occuperemo delle nuovissime produzioni sul lp dei Poets, Toni Borlotti ed i suoi Flauers, degli svedesi Maharajas (tutti su Teen Sound) e di alcune meravigliose ristampe su Misty Lane R., Tina Peel, Guilloteens, Bold e Tl-Puddle Martyrs....l'instancabile Massimo del Pozzo ci ricorda che siamo ancora nel 1967 !!! TEEN SOUND RECORDS 2008

La Teen Sound Records di Massimo Del Pozzo, divisione di Misty Lane, pare aver lanciato da tempo una sfida con se stessa sfornando periodicamente nuove produzioni e nuove band, naturalmente sempre in un ambito oscillante tra il sixties-beat italiano e internazionale, il garage e la psichedelia.
Raro possa sbagliare un colpo: anche tra fine 2007 e l'inizio di questo 2008 ha pubblicato tre piccoli capolavori, per versi diversi, tre band italiane, che vanno a rimpinguare l'ormai vastissimo catalogo della Misty Lane Appreciation Society, un patrimonio discografico e artistico italiota unico nel suo genere che è riuscito a gettare un prezioso ponte tra il panorama garage nostrano e quello internazionale.
THE NARCOTICS - "All The Purple Pussies" CD
Di italiano questi quattro ragazzi hanno proprio poco a dir la verità: si stenta a credere siano bolognesi. A partire dalla straordinaria grinta "americana" del lead vocalist Muddy George nell'iniziale dylaniana/strascicata "All The Purple Pussies", giù nelle "garagistiche" "Fuckin' Shootin' Star", "Stuck In The Station", "Troubles (Give Me A Hard On)", "Vanishing", ballata ricca di chiaroscuri, così come "(My) Death Party".
In queste canzoni eseguite con rigore e passione, giocate sui duetti serrati dei chitarristi Juan Ventura e Ramblin' Flep, sembra di riascoltare i Miracle Workers degli anni 80, quelli di un disco glorioso come "Overdose" (1988), senza sapere che in fondo all'album si cela una martellante cover proprio della band di Portland, "Love Has No Time", tratta dalla loro prima opera.
Muddy George ha qui la possibilità di sfoderare al meglio i suoi timbri vocali animaleschi, davvero molto affini a quelli dell'indimenticabile leader dei Miracle Workers, W. Gerry Mohr.
Spruzzi dei padrini di Rochester The Chesterfield Kings e di Fuzztones in "Jenny", ma anche nei titoli suddetti: in "Narcotic Mess-a-round" Muddy si spinge ancora più in là ; come non ravvisare nella sua vigorosa performance le corde dell'Iggy Pop più maturo?
Un'impeccabile "Take Me To The Streets", giocata su un mirabile equilibrio elettro-acustico, sigilla una mezz'oretta di hard-garage senza tempo, di quello che non ti lascia riprender fiato neanche per un attimo.
THE TEMPONAUTS - "A Million Year Picnic" CD
Il piacentino Simone Modicamore, alla guida dei bravi Rookies, aveva siglato tra il 2004 e il 2005 anche due interessanti lavori acustici con gli Warm Morning.
Ribadisce ora il suo eclettismo vocale e di chitarrista partecipando a questo nuovo progetto di The Temponauts, una straordinaria creatura sonora guidata da Stefano "Pibio" Silva, autore di 11 brani su 12 di "A Million Year Picnic", completato dalla cover del classico soul di Jamison, "That's How Strong My Love Is".
Straordinaria perché da perfetti Temponauti, i nostri cinque riescono a innestare gli stupendi intrecci vocali e chitarristici di Silva, Ferrari, Vascelli e Modicamore su una sensibilità ritmica e compositiva moderna, decisamente personale, una lezione che viene da molto lontano: Byrds, Beach Boys, ovvero i maestri in assoluto dell'estetica adottata dai Temponauts in "A Million Year Picnic".
Melodie e armonie spaziali, aeree, elargite a profusione in "Captain Frustration", "Toxic & Lazy", "Come Back Saturday", "The Down Bums", "Atomic Fire Sister", dense di fascinosi e avvolgenti incisi: ricordate gli australiani Church, quelli più sognanti? Persino la cover suddetta subisce un "trattamento" speciale, perdendosi tra le nuvole, nel blu dipinto di blu!
The Temponauts sanno comunque diventare più incisivi e graffiare con chitarre aggressive nelle sorprendenti "Operation: Coroner" e "Not In The Morning". Ma se volete coglierli al massimo dell'ispirazione, dovete ascoltare le intricate "Men Of Dangerous Maybe" e la finale "The Return Of Josie Wales", pura aerea psichedelia, trionfo cerebrale di quella che pare una concept-opera messa a punto sulla loro navicella spaziale, proiettata nel nuovo millennio con perfida dolcezza, a delineare nuovi, sbalorditivi orizzonti espressivi.
THE CAVEMEN - "Fiore Nero" CD
Ha senso nel 2008 comporre un album nella più pura tradizione del beat italiano dei sixties?
A un primo ascolto di questo "Fiore Nero", secondo album dei non più giovani The Cavemen per la Teen Records si rimane un tantino perplessi davanti a versi come "...tutti x uno balliamo lo shake!".
Ma poi, quando ci riprovi, rimani conquistato dall'aggressività e dalla sincera attitudine con cui Michele Biondi, Matteo Lamargese & c. riescono nell'ardua impresa di riattualizzare una materia così stagionata, soprattutto a causa della lingua madre.
E' soprattutto l'incisività delle fuzz-guitar e dei soli a compiere questo piccolo miracolo, i languidi a tratti rabbiosi vocalismi dei due in "Fiore Nero", "Io sto qui", "Non mi odiar", "L'ora delle streghe", nelle lente, amare e nostalgiche "Sogno" e "Il lungo addio" (con tastiere d'annata in bella evidenza), tra i picchi del disco.
Decisamente gustoso lo strumentale "Mexicali", sorta di hard-surfin' con la tromba di Diego Frabetti.
Tre cover dei lontani sixties completano l'album: la più nota è "La lezione del capellone" di Michel Polnareff, seguita da "Il treno della morte" (The Jaguars) e "Prima c'era luce" (New Trolls), tutte reinterpretate con quella decisa impronta personale che permea tutto il lavoro.

La copertina sembra la pubblicità di una boutique di Carnaby Street del 1967. La prima nota della prima canzone è quella di un sitar. E se qualcuno avesse ancora qualche dubbio su quale possa essere l’epoca di riferimento per le tredici canzoni di questo album degli A’dam Sykles, non bastasse il nome della band basterebbe aggiungere che si tratta del nuovo progetto di Massimo Del Pozzo (già negli Others, Tyme Society, Trypps, creatore della meravigliosa fanzine 60s “Misty Lane”, nome esteso anche alla sua label) vale a dire il più infaticabile, entusiasta, incrollabile rappresentante italiano della scuola neo-sixties. Garage, ma non solo. In questa occasione a imporsi è l’anima più gentile e trasognata di Del Pozzo, quella che potremmo definire psycho-pop, o popsike, o acid-folk. Insomma, ci siamo capiti. I riferimenti di queste ballate ultra-melodiche, costruite con una cura per i dettagli sonori ammirevole (si sentono acustiche, flauti, violoncelli, harpsichord) si chiamano Beatles, Love, Blossom Toes, Left Banke (la favolosa “Sunshine Girl”), i Kinks di “Something Else”. Ma si aggiunga alla miscela anche certo sunshine pop californiano, prodromi di prog alla Traffic (Shades of Blue) e di hard alla Hendrix/Deep Purple (“Rain Child”). E persino, balzando di vent’anni in avanti, raga-rock in stile Paisley Underground (vengono in mente soprattutto i Rain Parade e i Three O’Clock). Non chiamatela nostalgia, però. Questi sono piccoli gioielli fuori dal tempo, e non riuscire ad apprezzare canzoni bellissime come “The Big Green” o “Mary Grace’ s Mind” in ossequio a una presunta fame di “nuovo” significherebbe solo essere dei poveri di spirito.

"Out Of The Circle Game"
Alcune note di sitar aprono Om, brano iniziale di OUT OF THE CIRCLE GAME, primo album dei romani A'DAM SICKLES, ultima incarnazione di Massimo Del Pozzo, qui in veste di lead vocal, chitarrista e compositore.
L'avvio orientaleggiante e meditativo e' gia' un ottimo preludio ai toni malinconici ed autunnali che avvolgono un disco che si avvale di preziosi apporti strumentali di diversi collaboratori (flute, violins, cello, horn, harpsichord, dulcimer, tabla drum).
L'approccio garage é notevolmente stemperato dalla delicatezza compositiva di brani come Feel the pain (Roby's song), Mary Grace's mind, The big green e lo strumentale Victor's lullaby.
La versatilita' degli A'dam Sickles e' poi confermata dalla bossa di Sunshine girl, dall'atmosfera folk/barocca degli altri strumentali Daisy e Sugarplum fairy.
Le piu' energiche Yellow day, Rain Child, She lives in my mind, con l'organo di Daniele Onorati in bella evidenza, mostrano invece il lato piu' vigoroso degli A.S.
Quello che colpisce in Out of the circle game e' come le influenze esterne, barrettiane in primo luogo, siano metabolizzate mirabilmente originando un sound ricco, ben amalgamato nelle sue diverse componenti ma soprattutto decisamente personale: il risultato sono delle songs armonicamente affascinanti, sature di splendidi cori e dalla perfetta taratura che a primo ascolto colpiscono spirito e mente, a secondo conquistano sensi e memoria insinuandovisi con sobrieta' ed eleganza rari di questi tempi.

Le biciclette di Amsterdam. Quelle bianche. I Provos. I Sixties. La ribellione. Un mondo lisergico. La liquidità. I Beatles bianchi. I fiori e i loro figli. Un salto di quarant'anni. Roma: 2009. Volti noti, vecchie storie, grandi speranze. Massimo Del Pozzo, colui che fu gli Others, colui che è la Teen Sound, Misty Lane e tantissimo altro e gli A'dam Sykles. Un mondo a parte, difficilmente codificabile dal linguaggio moderno, praticamente impossibile da capire per chi non abbia voglia, o non abbia avuto voglia, di confrontarsi con un passato fondamentale per la costruzione della cultura moderna. La psichedelia dei sixties, oggi la ritroviamo ovunque. Ma da dove arrivava? Ecco, gli A'dam Sykles possono spiegarvelo in poche parole. Con Out Of The Circle Game. Con le rifrazioni Beatlesiane di The Big Green e Mary Grace's Mind.. Con gli stacchi alla 13th Floor's Elevator di Om. Con le atmosfere acidissime di Shades of Blue che sembra una canzone dei Byrds. Ecco, loro possono spiegarvelo in questo modo. Attraverso un disco che è una cultura. Che parla di una cultura. Che è il recupero di una cultura. Un recupero meraviglioso, toccante e stilisticamente incredibile. Che, se esistesse una giustizia nel mondo della musica, sarebbe preso come esempio di rinascimento musicale. Almeno per il nostro paese. Non esisto a definire Out Of The Circle Games uno dei migliori dischi sixties che l'Italia abbia mai prodotto. Da sempre.

There’s a definite Byrds & Love influence happening here. Rome, Italy's A'dam Sykles have their influences down pat on 'Out Of The Circle Game' but, with a more contemporary approach. Main man/songwriter & former Others guitarist/singer, Massimo Del Pozzo leads this new 5-piece band. Think somewhat of fellow contemporary US/UK Psychedelic/Garage band, The Higher State and you'll find that both of these bands tread similar abet slightly different U.S. Paisley waters. Album opener, the Sitar-driven 'Om' sets the mood covered up in a Marshmellow Overcoat. The Sykles dreamier approach separates them slightly at times the former mentioned band like on the Love influenced 'Shades of Blue' with its' delightful flute touches & Beatles backwards guitar. The Baroque touches of 'Feel The Pain (Roby's Song)' & the short instro intro 'Sugarplum Fairy', the relaxing solo acoustic guitar instrumental 'Daisy', and the gentle Classical acoustic guitar/ string quartet instrumental 'Victor's Lullaby' set apart these three songs somewhat from the album's other songs. I could imagine this last instrumental in a film's soundtrack. 'Sunshine Girl' has a breezy Boyce & Hart/Sunshine Pop late Spring, groovy dance feel to it. Speaking of soundtracks, this swell tune could've fit on the 'Casino Royale' soundtrack. The pleasant 'She lives in my mind' flows pretty well with Daniele Onorati's swirling organ levitating this song. The Love/Byrds amalgam melodic drive of 'Yellow Day' guides this Sunny song and, it could see it on an early Three O'Clock album like 'Sixteen Tambourines.' It’s easily the best song on the whole album. I think Arthur Lee would've been proud. 'Rain Child' however ends the album on a very Rockin' note with some very cool Freakbeat guitar. It’s a close 2nd place contender for best song with some great '67 fuzzy n' wah-wah guitar & vocal harmonies happening here. Think early Jefferson Airplane, Love, & the Jimi Hendrix Experience at their rocking '67 best. Hey, I think The Fuzztones are looking for a song like this ?! Don't give this song up just yet. "AEROPLANES IN THE BACKYARD"

In una cosa gli Strange Flowers, pisani, eccellono nel loro AEROPLANES IN THE BACKYARD: scrivere ballate mid-tempo pigre ed indolenti, accattivanti nella loro attitudine proto-garage.
Mai aggressivo il vocalist Michele Marino' (autore di musica e testi) sa catturare con le sue movenze decadenti, mentre il chitarrista Nicola Cionini nei suoi interventi misurati colpisce acidamente (Clouds of blonde girls).
Tutto l'album si muove secondo queste coordinate, risultando di volta in volta piu' psichedelico (Aeroplanes/Yellow of sun) o morbidamente colloquiale (Helen says).
Summa di questi elementi la finale Everyone has a spot in the sunshine, quasi sette minuti di splendore lisergico con la chitarra solista che si libra acida e sfolgorante a sugellare un album in bilico magicamente tra tentazioni hard ed oasi psichedeliche. Pasquale Boffoli

" ABRACADABRANTESQUE"

Cinque maturi giovanotti francesi dediti ad un fuzz-garage rock di estrazione sixties che con questo secondo lavoro celebrano i 30 anni di vita musicale.
Hanno preso il moniker da uno dei piu' grandi successi di Jacques Dutronc, tra i rockers francesi piu' in vista negli anni '60. E' nel 1976 che tre degli attuali membri dei PLAYBOYS (F.Albertini, F.Lejeune, F.Durban) fondano uno dei primi punk-garage acts francesi, Les Dentistes, ma e' dall'entrata di Pierre Negre alla chitarra solista nel 1979 che diventano una Nuggets/Pebbles band, accodandosi in sostanza a Fuzztones, Lyres e Chesterfield Kings nel revival Garage internazionale.
Incidono il primo album nel 1985 ed attraverso varie vicissitudini giungono a questo ABRACADABRANTESQUE che e' la celebrazione in una mezz'oretta del loro beat-garage ancora freschissimo, molto vicino nello spirito al party-sound dei sempreverdi americani Fleshtones.
Brani dai tipici titoli 'capelloneschi' come Les jours ou' tout va da travers, Je revendique, Pour qui me prenez-vous? , Mieux vaut etre seul incarnano paradossalmente nel 2009 la colonna sonora ideale di feste beat in casa di quarant'anni fa, ma i vocals insolenti di Albertini, il fuzz-guitar onnipresente a sottolineare riffs ingenui e le tastiere non invadenti non suonano datati: sono portatori sani di una rabbia esistenziale ruspante e naif, alla Nino Ferrer (Albertini lo ricorda molto nel timbro vocale!), ancora coinvolgente.
Abbiamo a che fare quindi con dei Fleshtones francesi? Decisamente si', basti ascoltare le grezze Mon obsession, Abracadabra e Qu'est-ce que je peux faire.
Animal, lento e rarefatto, e' l'unico brano a prendere le distanze dal mood generale del disco. LETS' HAVE A PARTY WITH THE PLAYBOYS! Pasquale Boffoli
