ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE: Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride is sprawling, slow-burning psyche rock that paints creeping moods with layer upon layer of drony, blissed-out guitars and etheral vocals.... This is the perfect accompaniment to slowly losing your mind (in the best possible way). Don't come looking for big chorus or bubblegum blurts - just settle in for the long, blissed-out ride.
MUSICFEEDS.COM.AU: Using looping, distortion, reverb and delay to great effect The Black Ryder construct waering spires of blissful noise all over laced with haunting female vocals a la My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless... The Black Ryder are bone-bendingly good, make sure you grab every opportunity to see them that you can, because they’re not going to be playing small venues for long.
MUSIC AUSTRALIA GUIDE: Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride is a permanent sunset leading in a dangerous and balmy night ahead; like an alternate soundtrack to David Lynch’s Wild at Heart. 4/5 stars.
SOULSHINE: 'Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride’ is a phenomenal debut which has come entirely out of nowhere. Considering the band has existed for what seems like a flicker - starting off with massive support slots before working their way into recording - this an extremely tight and mature album. If you’re lucky enough to come across this on your travels, get yourself a copy before they disappear. With an album like this, secrets don’t get kept for long enough for you to second guess yourself. The Black Ryder have arrived with a debut that will undoubtedly be the benchmark for the duration of their existence. 4.5 / 5 star rating.
OZMUSICSCENE.COM.AU: The Black Ryder’s debut album Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride is a revelation, with Aimee Nash’s haunting vocals and reverb saturated guitars creating tunes that are intensely moody and mysterious.
SIDE STREET SYDNEY: It’s not often that we’ll post an album launch in our scene section, but this one is so good that a trip to purchase it should be penned in your diary alongside dinner and buying toilet paper. Hauntingly melodic, Black Ryder have achieved the kind of sound that takes artists years to perfect. Sydney can be proud to lay claim to the Surry Hills locals Aimée Nash and Scott Von Ryper, who started their journey together with a school crush gone bad…
ELECTRIC ROULETTE: Huge pulsating orbs of guitar… ready to blow bits of your face into your brain-matter… Let It Go is a thing of despicable beauty all hunched & wounded and Sweet Come Down does exactly what is says on the tin. Dig these.
INPRESS: The Ryders way with carefully building a Spiritualized-style epic from some echoed guitar and floor–tom thumps is a formidable thing.
DRONE MAGAZINE: As soon as they started playing I knew I was in love. They are one of the most exciting acts - both in Australia and in the wider psychedelic scene.
TULIP FRENZY: : All we can say is Wow. “Burn and Fade” sounds like the glorious offspring of a marriage between Spacemen 3 and Luna, with Mazzy Star doing the officiating.
THE BADSEED: : Anyone who gets a horn over acid rock should definitely keep an eye out for The Black Ryder, they could just be one of the best new psychedelic bands to come out of Australia for a good while.
BRAG MAGAZINE: Wigging out and in on regular occasions – but sonically, constructing a wall of sound that’s thick & spicy, like treacle infused with chilli and lemon myrtle.
TIME OUT: Imagine the swagger of The Brian Jonestown Massacre with the dark blues/rock sensibility of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club topped off with a good dose of Mazzy Star reverb-drenched country minimalism.
TIME OFF MAGAZINE: Reviving droning ‘90s rock better than most of it was ever played.
DRUM MEDIA: With a blast of feedback & pounding drums The Black Ryder immediately settled into some tight driving rhythms with sudden outbursts of guitar... This act is building a formidable live reputation.
DRINKIN’ AND DRONING: The Black Ryder is an Australian band that gives other reverb soaked bands a run for their money. They employ soothing female vocals to complement the fields of reverb and distortion much like My Bloody Valentine did on classics such as Loveless. Nostalgia never sounded so good.
