1977 The Detours formed in the summer of 1977 when Scott Hoogland (Mechanics, Poop) introduced Cox and Bean to Rikk Agnew, aka General Hospital. With Gordon Cox on vox, Mike Koerber on guitar, Jeff Bean on bass, and Rikk Agnew on drums (imagine a mixture of Keith Moon and Rat Scabies). Rikk began to write originals, initiating the signiture OC sound with tunes such as Creatures, No Way, and Rip It Up. Along with other tunes...19 & Nowhere, Pee, Beep Beep, and Hated...the band played perhaps the first punk show in OC; a lunchtime show at Fullerton High School in Fall '77. Amongst the student body audience, a 10th grade Mike Ness, who later confessed to stealing the band's distortion pedal. 1978/1979 Rikk moved to lead guitar, and Casey Royer took over on drums. The band added more tunes written by Rikk, Bean, and Cox...Amoeba, Hang 10 in East Berlin, Guns, The Saint, Obnoxious, Youth in Asia, and Losers. The band recorded Amoeba, Hang 10, and The Saint at Dan Van Patten's (Berlin) studio in San Diego. Hang 10 appears on Up Another Octave Compilation album. 1980 Casey and Rikk leave Detours and record the "blue album' with the Adolescents. Soon afterwards, Rikk rejoins the Detours, with Craig Briscoe (Tazers) on drums. The band adds OC Life, Falling Out, and Section 8 to their set, and play often at venues such as the Cuckoo's Nest and The Fleetwood. 1981 The Detours disband a second time, due to seperate interests. Rikk records 'All By Myself' with Frontier Records. 2006 The Detours begin rehearsals in Spring, with Cox on vox, Rikk and Dan Colburn on guitars, Jeff Beans on bass, and Shaun Coe on drums. The Detours play a benefit show on Sept 16th and the Doll Hut on Sept 23rd, as well as TSOL's Farewell show on November 26th. 2007 - Present Early in the year, Dan broke his wrist skateboarding and decided not to return full time. Rikk is also taking extended time off. In their place, Sean Elliot and Chkn are taking over on guitars. For 2009, the Detours are in hibernation.
