Fachleute wissen: Talent und Ehrgeiz allein reichen heutzutage nicht mehr aus, um sich auf
einem zunehmend schwieriger werdenden Musikmarkt langfristig zu etablieren. Es muss das
Einzigartige sein, das Unverwechselbare, jene Innovation also, die Künstler und Bands aus dem
Einheitsbrei gesichtsloser Acts herausragen lässt. Im Volksmund nennt man so etwas Profil oder
Charisma. The Dogma besitzen beides. Sie sind der seltene, hell leuchtende Diamant in einem
riesigen Glas voller Glasperlen, der sofort hervorsticht, der markant ist und ein hohes Maß an
Eigenständigkeit verkörpert. Schon mit ihrem Debütalbum Black Roses konnte die italienische
Band Presse und Zuhörerschaft gleichermaßen überzeugen. Mit ihrem zweiten Werk A Good
Day To Die demonstrieren die Musiker Daniele Santori (Gesang), Cosimo Santori (Gitarre),
Stefano Smeriglio (Keyboards), Marco Bianchella (Schlagzeug) und ihr Neuzugang Andrea
..Masso.. Massetti (Bass) nun eine erstaunliche Weiterentwicklung ihres bereits von Natur aus
eindrucksvollen Könnens.
Aufbauend auf einem clever orchestrierten und gefühlvollen Mix aus Heavy Metal, progressiven
Einflüssen, einer Prise Gothic und symphonische Versatzstücke zeigen The Dogma auf A Good
Day To Die, was sie von so vielen anderen Formationen unterscheidet. „Wir spielen einen sehr
emotionalen Metal", bringt Gitarrist Cosimo Binetti die Erfolgsformel seiner Band auf einen
einfachen Nenner. „Jeder Song zeichnet sich durch ein ganz eigenes, sehr intensives Gefühl
aus. Und genau das ist es auch, was die Fans an uns mögen. Jedes einzelne Stück trägt eine
tiefe Emotion in sich." Binetti ist gemeinsam mit Sänger Santori der Hauptsongschreiber der
Band. Er sagt: „Wir hatten diesmal ein ganzes Füllhorn an Ideen. Es gab so viel Material für
neue Songs, dass wir mühelos ein Doppelalbum hätten füllen können. Letztendlich haben wir
uns auf diese 12 Nummern geeinigt, so dass wir sicher sein können, wirklich nur die besten
Stücke auf A Good Day To Die zu präsentieren."
Ein Dutzend abwechslungsreiche Nummern (plus Intro) haben The Dogma für ihr neues Album
aufgenommen. Beginnend mit dem eingängigen Titelsong (Binetti: „Irgendwie ein traurig-
schöner Song mit viel Atmosphäre") über das treibende ..In The Name Of Rock.., das The
Dogma während der gemeinsamen Konzerte mit Lordi im Tourbus unter dem Eindruck einer
gerade beendeten furiosen Performance schrieben, und der sensiblen Ballade ..Autumn Tears..
bis hin zum von Freiheit und Eigenverantwortlichkeit handelnden ..Bitches Street.. durchzieht
die Scheibe ein erstaunlicher Facettereichtum. Das abschließende ..Christine Closed Her Eyes..
hat zudem eine besonders ergreifende Geschichte: „Christine war ein Fan von The Dogma. Sie
schickte uns jeden Tag ein kleines Gedicht per Email. Als ihre Verse plötzlich ausblieben, war
ich ziemlich besorgt und nahm Kontakt zu ihrer Familie auf. Ihre Schwester erzählte mir, dass
Christine seit langem an Depressionen litt und Selbstmord begangen habe. Ich war total
bestürzt und schrieb diesen Song in Gedenken an sie."
Produziert und gemischt wurde A Good Day To Die ebenso wie der Vorgänger Black Roses im
Hagener ..Woodhouse Studio.. von Siggi Bemm (u.a. Tiamat, The Gathering, Samael). „Es ist
einfach phantastisch, wie Siggi unser musikalisches Anliegen immer wieder versteht und
umsetzt", sagt Binetti. „Seine Arbeit auf Black Roses war schon toll, aber beim neuen Album
haben nicht nur wir uns, sondern auch er sich nochmals gesteigert." Erwähnenswert ist auch
die phantastische Stimme von Gastsängerin Lisa Middelhauve (Xandria), die man im Titeltrack
und in der Nummer ..Angel in Cage.. hören kann. Kein Zufall also, dass bei einer solch illustren
Besetzung nur ein Klassewerk wie dieses entstehen konnte.
Bei der Gründung von The Dogma dagegen spielte der Zufall eine große Rolle: Eigentlich hatte
es Cosimo Binetti in eine Kapelle der italienischen Stadt Ancona verschlagen, um einen
verstorbenen Freund zu beerdigen. Dass ihm dabei ausgerechnet der dort angestellte Daniele
Santori über den Weg lief, sehen die Zwei als Fügung. „Es konnte nur so kommen", vermuten
die beiden, „zwei gestrauchelte Existenzen wie wir mussten zwangsläufig aufeinander treffen."
Noch während der Trauerfeier nahmen Binetti und Santori Kontakt zueinander auf, unterhielten
sich anschließend lange über ihre musikalischen Vorstellungen und beschlossen, eine Band zu
gründen. Dass Santori auf Gothic Metal steht, während Binetti vom traditionellen Metal kommt,
stand ihren Plänen nicht im Wege. Ganz im Gegenteil: Hört man sich das Resultat ihrer
musikalischen Liaison an, entsteht aus eben dieser Reibung das besondere Flair der Musik.
Ihre ersten Shows spielten The Dogma im Sommer 2001, seither folgten zahllose weitere
Konzerte, unter anderem mit den finnischen Monster-Rockern Lordi im Herbst 2006, bei denen
die junge Formation zusätzliche Reife und Erfahrung sammeln konnte. 2002 erschien das erste
Demo, das sich per Mailorder vor allem in Deutschland erstaunlich gut verkaufte. Im Frühjahr
2006 wurde ihr Erstwerk Black Roses veröffentlicht, seither eilt die Band von einem Erfolg zum
nächsten. „Es ist unglaublich viel passiert", erklärt Binetti. „Viele Fans schrieben uns, um ihre
Begeisterung mitzuteilen, wir durften im vergangenen Sommer beim Wacken Open Air spielen
und hatten Konzertanfragen sogar aus Amerika. Alles Ereignisse, die uns menschlich und
musikalisch weitergebracht haben. Und genau das spürt man auf A Good Day To Die in jeder
einzelnen Note."

Experts agree that talent and ambition are no longer enough these days for an act to get established in an increasingly demanding music market. It’s that unique, unmistakable, in other words that innovative element that makes an artist or a band stand out among the everyday fare of faceless acts. This is what’s commonly known as having “a profile” or “charisma”. The Dogma have both. They are that rare, sparkling diamond in a big jar full of glass pearls that immediately draws attention to itself, that’s distinctive and sticks out because it is so independent. Their debut album, Black Roses, was enough to convince press and audience alike of the qualities of the band from Italy, and A Good Day To Die, the second offering by Daniele Santori (vocals), Cosimo Santori (guitars), Stefano Smeriglio (keyboards), Marco Bianchella (drums), and new addition Andrea ‘Masso’ Massetti (bass), proves that their inherently impressive talent has undergone an amazing development.
Based on a cleverly orchestrated and emotive mélange of heavy metal, progressive influences and a sprinkling of gothic and symphonic elements, The Dogma demonstrate on A Good Day To Die the qualities that distinguish them from many other acts: “We play a very emotional brand of metal,” guitarist Cosimo Binetti reduces his band’s success formula to a simple denominator. “Every song is marked by a very special, very intense feel. And that’s precisely what our fans like about us. Every track is based on deep emotion.” Together with vocalist Santori, Binetti is the band’s main songwriter. He says: “This time, we had a whole cornucopia of ideas. There was so much new material that we could easily have filled a double album. At the end of the day, we settled on these twelve numbers, so we can be sure that we are presenting only the best songs on A Good Day To Die.”
The Dogma recorded a dozen versatile tracks (plus an intro) for their new release. From the catchy title track (Binetti: “A sad-but-beautiful song in a way, with a lot of atmosphere”) through the driving ‘In The Name Of Rock’ - which The Dogma wrote on the road during their tour with Lordi, still under the influence of the wild performances they had just delivered - to the sensitive ballad, ‘Autumn Tears’ and ‘Bitches Street’, a track about freedom and autonomy, the recording is pervaded by an amazing wealth of different facets. There is a moving story behind the final track, ‘Christine Closed Her Eyes’: “Christine was a fan of The Dogma. She sent us a little poem by e-mail every day. When these poems suddenly stopped arriving, I began to feel worried and contacted her family. Her sister told me that Christine had been suffering from depression for a long time and committed suicide. I was totally shocked and wrote this song in memory of her.”
Like its predecessor, Black Roses, A Good Day To Die was produced and mixed by Siggi Bemm (Tiamat, The Gathering, Samael, among others) at the Woodhouse studios in Hagen, Germany. “It’s just fantastic how Siggi understands and translates our musical ideas,” says Binetti. “His work on Black Roses had been great, but the new album did not only see us progress, Siggi also surpassed himself.” The awesome voice of guest vocalist Lisa Middelhauve (Xandria) on the title track and ‘Angel in Cage’ also deserves a mention. So in view of this illustrious line-up, it’s no coincidence that an impressive offering like A Good Day To Die emerged.
Coincidence appears to have played a significant role when it came to the foundation of The Dogma: Cosimo Binetti had come to a chapel in the Italian town of Ancona to bury a friend. Both he and Daniele Santori, who happened to work there, consider their meeting a stroke of fate: “It just had to be,” the two surmise, “two reprobates such as us simply had to meet at some point.” Binetti and Santori established contact even during the funeral service, talked at length about their musical ideas and decided to form a band. The fact that Santori is into gothic metal while Binetti prefers his metal the traditional way did not stand in the way of their plans. The opposite seems to be the case: listening to the result of their musical liaison, it’s this particular friction that accounts for the special flair of their music.
The Dogma played their first shows in summer 2001, followed by countless concerts since, among them the tour with Finnish monster rockers, Lordi, in autumn 2006, which saw the young act gain maturity and gather experience. Their first demo, which sold surprisingly well by mail order, particularly in Germany, arrived in 2002. Their debut album, Black Roses, came out in spring 2006, and the band has been going from strength to strength ever since. “So much has happened,” Binetti muses. “Lots of fans have written to us to tell us how much they like the band, we played the Wacken Open Air last summer and have even had enquiries for shows in the States. These experiences have helped us on a personal as well as on a musical level. That’s what you can feel in every single note on A Good Day To Die.”
