Review in the Orlando Examiner
I was stoked that a Gainesville band was represented for the festival, and this band represented a turning point in the show that went back to the beloved Rocksteady roots of late 60s Jamaica. This 6-piece band was super-tight, but also completely relaxed & comfortable onstage. The horns were smooth as silk, and the vocals put me in a Trenchtown Rude Boy time-warp. Every musician in this band was 100% on their game. It seemed that the crowd was torn between dancing and totally mesmerized by the sheer excellence of this band. I didn’t want them to stop playing…ever. The soulful vocalist broke out a djembe drum for one song, a guiro for a few others, and Magadog’s trombonist sat in on a song. They even covered CCR's “Susie Q” with their own Rocksteady flavor. These guys (and one gal playing a wicked tenor sax) have old-school running through their veins, but they’re no geezers. Formed just in 2004, this band should be headed for legendary status - it’s no surprise that Gainesville is home to yet another extraordinary band of this caliber. I haven’t seen a band with this kind of magic since Sacto's Filibuster in the 90s. I plan on following the feats of this band to come, and I suggest you do the same if you’re looking for an unsurpassed Rocksteady fix.
-Duppy: (noun) taken from Jamaican folklore; an unruly spirit risen from a consecrated grave; a ghost; a poltergeist- Formed in 2004, The Duppies have been sighted possessing many a unsuspecting citizen and driving them into frenetic dancing spasms that can only be described as "musical convulsions of the soul." Fermenting in the dirty south swamps of Gainesville, FL, The Duppies have set out to conquer all non-believers in a display of sweet musical Armageddeon....
