An exploratory improvising collective, The Exploits of Elaine morph elements of kraut, gamelan, metal and jazz into bizarre shapes and ghostly landscapes.
The earliest incarnation of the band came together in 2002 to make Mogwai/GY!BE influenced post-rock, and over the following years produced three epic and cathartic EPs. By 2006 they had begun to strip down their sound, introducing acoustic instruments and percussion, and elements of drone and distant folk musics. 2008 saw them turn solely to improvising, uniting the varied colours of their previous work, and reconfiguring the group from a strict unit to a shifting collective.
People say nice things:
DROWNED IN SOUND - “...indigenous folk music from a continent which doesn’t exist on this Earth...like looking out over a vast ocean and simultaneously being able to focus on individual waves.”
LOSING TODAY - "an eerie slice of abstract atmospherics that creaks, whines and see saws throughout amid a haze of slow recoiling dislocated arid delta blues, unsettling and part art rock...sometimes revealing delicately woven drone mantras and others a curious shanty like presence"
GRAVID HANDS - "...picture an immense rusted post-apocalyptic machine, its parts all whirring in synchronisation and grinding together. This is folk music from a dystopian future where the vestiges of technology are gradually decaying and the old pastoral/urban dichotomy takes on new, sinister connotations"
Highlights include soundtracking Sarah Wood’s short film ‘Book of Love’ at the ICA and Latitude Festival, backing Tom Greenwood (Jackie O-Motherfucker) and sharing stages with Akron/Family, Acid Mother’s Temple, Zu, epic45, Raccoo-oo-oon, July Skies, James Blackshaw, Talibam!, Lovvers and many other good friends.
Members also record as/are involved in epic45, The Good Anna, EL Heath, The Family Elan, Syuzhet, Birmingham Improviser's Orchestra, enten/eller, The Amber Sleep, L.H.O.O.Q., Pan Am Scam, Strap the Button and Kettle Blacksmith (among others!). Patrick Farmer and Eric Heath have both exhibited multimedia works at galleries, whilst Patrick co-runs the Compost and Height label David co-runs Records on Ribs label and Stuart can often be found creating and designing sounds on films for Anonymous Room.

SEVEN is incredibly proud to present a night of laughs and brilliant musicianship with ADRIAN EDMONDSON and THE BAD SHEPHERDS!
Saturday May 23rd
"The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because we really like the noise. We think the songs are better than people remember. We love folk instruments. It works.
We do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they're not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era.
We've mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and we've stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occassionally we just thrash! I've always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70's."
