"...The sound of The 5150's is a full tonal assult of bluesy rythms mixed with an overall rock edge. Sudduth's flowing leads compliment Brostad's throaty vocal style, .... In short, The 5150's bring the rock without an overdose of self-indulging jam."
- The Reader
The 5150's began, in a sense, in the craptacular winter of 2004. Dustin and Cass met in the basement of the infamous Honest Don and along with bass player "Diamond" Jim Tuesday (who's last name had to be changed on account of the fact that Cass can't spell the real one) began the short-lived, but high voltage project entitled "Honest Don and the Joint Chiefs".
In true Rock and Roll style, this band ended at the bottom of a bottle and with a few black eyes. Dustin and Cass, however, found that they worked well together in many ways and managed to stick together with a kind of musical crazy glue. They eventually found a new drummer (Max) and Jim jumped back on ship, though it didn't last long. This kicked off a "basstravaganza" of sorts, in that the sheer volume of bass players who rolled in and out over the next 6 months would bring a strong man to tears.
Eventually Dustin and Cass put two and two together (read: Dustin - "I have a bass" Cass - "I have a bass amp and play rhythm guitar" Both - "But when are we going to find a bass player?" Duh.) and The 5150's were born. Why The 5150's, you ask? Vanhalen referances and Council Bluff's zip code aside, it refers to two addresses very near and dear to the hearts of it's members. Not as interesting as you thought, is it? I could have made something up....Maybe I will next time.
With Max on board and Cass on bass, The 5150's started to get the ball rolling. Max eventually moved on to more actively persue a life of pool halls and motorcycles. This lead to another string of stand-ins and members, Drummer Dan, and a very memorable show opening up for a ZZ Top cover band called "Sharp Dressed Man". I didn't really have to put that in here. I just like to say it. Dan worked out great for a while, but evetually moved on to persue other projects. Then, Mitch Leaders jumped on as our "special guy"
Cass and Dustin met Mitch through some good luck, a bag of lost cymbols, and some pretty near constant show-playing in both Omaha and Council Bluffs. Mitch's band, Red Scare (then known as Palaver) played with The 5150's at their first show at Shea Rileys. Members of both bands got along well together pretty much instantly and spent many a post-show afterparty basking in each others Star Wars/ Guitar/ Plant/ & Power Tool knowledge. However, all good things must come to an end and though we miss Mitch, The 5150's must go on.
