Growing up, Markus was into East Coast Hip Hop (Gangstarr, Common, Wu-Tang Clan) and Turntablism (X-men, Invisible Scratch Pickles, Beat Junkies, ETC...)DJing for Dallas' Liquid Men.
Jordan grew up with two uncle's that were DJ's (Joshua and Johnathan Graham) that heavily influenced him early in life on the better, more independent sides of music (Dinosaur Jr., Aphex Twin, Slint).
In high school both of Markuss and Jordons musical tastes shifted from the hip-hop scene to the more aggressive, indie-punk and emo genres of the late 90's (At the Drive-in, Jimmy Eat World, Refused) and those mutual tastes in music is what sparked a friendship. Both Markus and Jordon were in bands,(Every Double Life, Constance) which were your Emo/ Hardcore Rock and Roll bands.
Last year they decided to move to Denton,TX to get away from their hometown Irving, and basically to get into trouble. Having parties and playing the music they had been collecting for friends gave way to the idea of doing it on a serious level. Another inspiration for spinning was Jordan's uncle, Johnathan (DJG), doing 80's night at Haileys.
In December of 2005 they picked up a set of decks and decided they were going to start a dance party scene in Denton. In January Flashlight Party got their first party at the infamous Yellow House (R.I.P). It was great. After that it was like they had a residency for parties in that house, playing there several times a month and picking up parties all over town.
Flashlight Party had a brief stint in Dallas at Elm Street Bar, but decided that the crowd there really wasn't feeling the music that they were playing and moved on to new territories.
In August 2006, Flashlight Party picked up a weekly Wednesday slot at Haileys called RADIO CLASH, named after a mutual love for the Clash's song.
The music they spin together is very broad. They dont feel that setting a musical limitation is as important as it used to be, rather music is an emotional feeling that Markus and Jordon love to share with people. Here's a briefing: 70's to today, disco/punk/electro/hip hop/new wave/house/italo disco/indie/post punk/b-more house/electroclash laced with remixes.
