It all started with two friends who decided to move to Denton, TX and start some trouble. In the middle of all the fun these two played the music they collected and loved for their friends at parties. It turns out they were good at it. Its no surprise though if you take a look at their history.
Growing up, Markus with a K's first musical rebellion was into East Coast Hip-Hop. After absorbing the notable sounds of Gang Starr, Common, & Wu Tang Clan he had to try his hand at DJing. This led way to listening to the more technical sounds of turntabilism as practiced by the X-Men, Invisible Scratch Pickles & Beat Junkies. He put all this together in practice sessions as the DJ for Dallas's own hip-hop crew the Liquid Men.
On the flip side Jordan Kline didn't have to search for his musical rebellion. He had two uncles who were DJs namely Joshua and Johnathon Graham. These two heavily influenced him early in life on the better, more independent sides of music. Soon after he was listening to their recommendations of Dinosaur Jr., Aphex Twin, & Slint.
In high school their musical tastes shifted with the times to more aggressive, indie-punk and emo genres of the late 90's. Their enjoyment of At The Drive-In, Jimmy Eat World, and Refused sparked a friendship that led to involvement of the bands Every Double Life & Constance.
A few years, a couple of crates of records, and two turntables later they're playing music for their friends in Denton's infamous Yellow House, and Hailey's. They were mixing records they loved and enjoyed with little regard for genre.
Along comes Orlando Mas with a need for something different. In the first five years of living in Austin, TX he learned how to DJ from watching 626 Soul at various events & weeklies. Over time Orlando became involved at Plush with a 2-Step Garage weekly with Rion King and then later a genre hopping jazz night called Get Broke with Tyler, Merrick Brown & Will B. For Orlando dealing with the esoteric became easy and he needed to find the way to bridge the gap to club music. After an experimental move to Denton, TX and a visit to a random house party he found it. The Flashlight Party.
