The Funk Pirate Family
In the summer of 2003, a crew of friends made the dive from weekly concert goers to getting behind the tables and rocking parties-weddings-barmitzphas. With inspiration and motivation from DJs (local to more well known in the Los Angeles area), this crew of misfits are gaining recognition for playing for all ages and all different tastes of music. A love for the funk, soul (classic/neo), Hip Hop, and a slew of requested genres of music, the Funk Pirates excurse into uncharted neighborhoods to bring the good ol sweet sound of music you can sip a Boba and shake your tail feather to.
An idea originally conceived by the duo of The ReMitch and Baby Bubba, these two encouraged other friends to grab their parents 45s and 12s and put it to a sound they call the funk pirate sound system. Heavily influenced by the Los Angeles movement of recognizable Filipino DJs (Icy Ice, Babu, Rhettmatic to name a few), the Funk Pirate crew put their love and passion for music to the test, investing in 1200s, a mic, their parents tinikling album and a scratch record and hoped for the best. Mitch, aka The Remitch, a seasoned DJ, remembers when he first fell in love with Djing. "I remember when I saw this busta spinning at Rewind @ the Arena, back in the day, and he sucked balls. I was thinkin' to myself, if this busta can get up there and spin for this big-ass crowd and NOT sound too clean, I can fuckin do it! Plus this fool gets to rub elbows with some of the Legend DJs and Beat Junkies? I can do that too!" Baby Bubba (research hip hop scientist) has the knack for unearthing samples and breaks that are used in hip hop songs.
The rest of the crew composed of Bernie Rubble aka B-Nasty (a disciple of the beat junkie sound), C-A (the son of suns), SoulJAH (dub/world sound Selecta), Big Purm (the Ninja on the decks-dont even know hes on um), Lucky Jackson aka BustaNut (Lynwoods finest/Electromagnetic) and our newest member, D-Fib (DoubLL scratchologist) make up the Funk Pirate sound. Although in the young stages of a competitive culture, the Funk Pirates spin music they love, spreading the universal sound of making you get down on the get down. Funk, Peace, Love and Unity is the mission of this crew to tap into the funk in all of us.
