A History of the Geraniums-Part 1
In the last years of Professor Longhair, somewhere around 1978, Jeff Treffinger and Brendan Gallagher (under parallel circumstances) moved from New Jersey to New Orleans. In 1985 they met at the Economy in the yet full-imagined Warehouse District. Brendan wrote songs and tended bar at the Economy. Jeff played guitar and wrote songs with the soon to be famous band, Tribe Nunzio. They began collaborating in the late 80’s and in the early 90’s formed the Geraniums. They recorded a studio album “Little Houses in Space” featuring Iguana’s bassist Rene Coman, Brent Newman (aka Glynn Styler) on drums and produced by Daniel Lanois protégé and New Orleans resident Malcolm Burn.
In October of ’93 Gallagher and Treffinger, among others, created the legendary Mermaid Lounge and began playing there, first as the Jet Set Barbies with painter and bartender Pat Cronin on drums and then the newly formulated Geraniums with drummer Daemon Shea (Tribe Nunzio), Tom Marron (Song Dogs) on violin and harmonica. At the Mermaid the Geraniums opened for touring national acts including Vic Chestnut, Richard Buckner, Chris Whitley, Lil’ Band O’ Gold, Jim White, The Gourds and many others. The Geraniums still play frequently at New Orleans clubs like the Circle Bar, the Saturn Bar, Tipitinas, DBA, Fairgrinds and Bank Street Bar.
The Geraniums first CD “Little Houses in Space” is back in print and available at shows and local record stores. A new CD “the Limited Lexicon of Mexican Songs” will be available for Christmas.
A sampling of songs from both CDs comprises the enclosed demo. Other musicians on the disc include the late Warren Spotswood (trombone), Alex McMurray (guitar), Sarah Kramer (trumpet), and Malcolm Burn (keyboards).
