SUNN 0))) is the heavy rock equivalent of an institutional-size dose of Largactyl; when you finally get down, you stay down. SUNN 0))) makes sounds of weather formation size meditations, as monolithic as a brick of monosludge. SUNN 0))) music is huge and simple, like a future race of technologists who forgot how to build microchips so had to return to factory-sized computers. Its shamanic appeal is considerably enlivened by the sub-bass disfigurations caused to all bowels in the immediate proximity, whilst the lead guitar clings to your torso like a butter knife spreading Philly Lite first on a piece of toast, then on the bread board, then across the counter over the fridge and up the walls into adjacent rooms.Black One raises total void into the stratosphere spilling its unlight forth in petrification. This is the sixth and darkest sunn0))) album featuring very special guests Oren Ambarchi, Wrest (Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice/ Twilight) Malefic (Xasthur, Twilight) and John Weise (Bastard Noise). A showing of progressive yet primitive pure subsonic power committed to tape. Tonal magma explosions created under the influence of utter blackest atmospheres, sunn0))) endlessly seeks to push boundaries and demolish pre-conceived ideas of their emminence.
With their previous two albums, White1 and White2, sunn0))) explored deep dynamics, ambience, and introduced different instrumentation to their recordings: vocals (performed by Julian Cope on White1 and Attila Csihar/ Mayhem on White2), percussion (performed by Joe Preston on White1) and subsonic keyboards (performed by Rex Ritter/Jessamine-Fontanelle).
Black One continues this collaborative tradition in a rather down direction. Sinister vocal performances courtesy of Wrest (known for his solo work under the names Leviathan and Lurker of Chalice) and Malefic (known for his solo work under the name Xasthur) literally call from beyond the grave. Unorthodox and experimental recording methods were used to obtain the petrifyingly eerie tone of the voices on this album.
For the epic side 4 piece, "Bathory Erzebet", sunn0))) procured a casket then loaded it into a Cadillac Hearse, and locked Malefic inside with only a microphone and a severe sense of claustrophobia. The result is truly suffocating and disturbing! The composition of Black One benefits from somewhat extensive live action throughout 2004/2005 bringing more cohesive overall structure to the table. "Cry For The Weeper" and "It Took The Night To Believe" incorporate atonal melodic interplay within their massive skeletons. Mammoth giants crushing valleys of the drowned. Listeners will still experience core sunn0))) recording fundamentals like being completely overwhelmed by massive subsonic droning guitar riffs. But with Black One sunn0))) takes it 10 steps below the others by intensely obsessing over making the overall ambience of this album as bleakly crushing, and devoid of light as only they possibly could.
