Henhouse Prowlers, the powerhouse Chicago string band quintet, perform their brand of innovative bluegrass for audiences all across the country. They describe their sound as “new traditional” noting that much of their material is new and original, yet it touches on classic bluegrass themes such as love, loss, work, regret and death. The Prowlers’ fresh, descriptive songs have been featured in the PBS series The Ride of Our Lives, and they have just released their second CD, A Dark Rumor, produced by Don Stiernberg with assistance from Greg Cahill.
The Prowlers have shared the stage with everyone from jamgrassers like Cornmeal, to true bluegrass pioneers like Earl Scruggs. They tour extensively all over the Midwest region, as well as Colorado and the West, playing clubs and festivals, listening rooms and house concerts. Their energetic live shows appeal to young and old alike, winning over audiences with a wide repertoire of much-loved standards to complement their own unique musical narratives. The Prowlers’ image is in keeping with the gritty Chicago bluegrass circuit circa 1955: the band members wear suits and share a single vocal mic, weaving in and out—constant motion on stage. The effect is high energy, solid bluegrass that is pure entertainment.
“Good guys making good original music!”
—Greg Cahill, Special Consensus
“Their enthusiasm and dedication reminded me of all the things I love about bluegrass music, and this positive energy can be witnessed in their stage shows. It’s rare to have contemporary compositions that say ‘traditional bluegrass.’ Also rare is a democratic group of young musicians working so hard to avail themselves of every musical opportunity.”
—Don Stiernberg, producer
“This bluegrass band has the right formula: heavenly harmonies on top of furious fingerpicking, trucking down the highway at 200 mph. When you're dealing with a force of nature this big, you either get on the truck or get the hell out of the way.”
—Time Out Chicago
