The Hobos started in 1999, when Rolands Udris (called Udritis) returned to his home country Latvia (Lettland) from one of his many trips around the world and met three other guys Vilnis, Martins and Egons.
All members were born in Liepaja that is considered to be the most musical city in Latvia, because many other popular Latvian musicians were born there as well. Now the members of the band reside in Riga, the capital city of Latvia.
Musically the most experienced among the other band members is drummer Vilnis, but all of them have worked with well know musicians in Latvia before The Hobos was started. Rolands is the only one who has never received formal musical education. However, Rolands as a “street kid”, being only 15, began playing on the streets and in bars in China, Hong Kong, USA and India. Rolands is the leader of The Hobos and the author of their songs as well. The Hobos say that they play American pop music.
The Hobos got together in the beginning of January 1999; by the end of month members of the band felt that they are ready for first concert. Arranging the concert took much effort and time for an unknown band as The Hobos were at that time, several bars rejected The Hobos. Finally, manager of well-known café in Riga Ai, Karamba was convinced and allowed The Hobos to perform. The gig took place in the beginning of the week and band did not get paid for it, but were thankful for the given opportunity. Luckily, one of Brainstorm members was dinning there during The Hobos performance. He was surprised and excited about such a sudden show and quickly called other brainstormers to see it. The gig resulted in a party and as a result of whole event The Hobos supported Brainstorm in their Among the Suns Latvia tour.
By the end of the year 1999, The Hobos released their first album Numbvision. Two singles She Sounds Like A Little Child and Christian (I’m Gonna Be) became highly recognised and topped in the most popular radio station in Latvia – Radio SWH. Album Numbvision also received Grand Prix award as the best Rock&Pop album at the annual Latvian Music Awards 1999.
The debut album Numbvision was released in November 1999, but already in March 2000 The Hobos received the Gold Disc (more than 8000 albums sold in Latvia). In autumn 2000, video for song Christian (I’m Gonna Be) was made. The video received an award as the best video at the Latvian Music Awards 2000.
The second album called Perfect Solution was released in June 2001. Perfect Solution is an original project because of the special bonus track it contains. The bonus track is an interactive material containing video for the song Christian (I’m Gonna Be) and giving other possibilities. The album Perfect Solution won the best rock album prize at the Latvian Music Awards 2001. Perfect Solution was mastered in London, in Abbey Road studio by sound engineer Nick Webb, who has worked with such well-known artists as John Lenon, Queen, Pink Floyd, UB40, Duran Duran.
At the beginning of year 2002, the first single Walk All Night from the up-coming album Flashback Mornings was released. The single as well as the previous album Perfect Solution is enhanced and includes video track and karaoke.
Third album Flashback Mornings was released in May 2002. It was presented in band’s rehearsal room, because all songs from Flashback Mornings were written there and that’s why it had special atmosphere. There are 14 songs on the album and as the previous one it contains a bonus video track for video of the first single Walk All Night, band’s message to fans and lyrics of songs in karaoke format. Together with the third album, a video for song Flying Away was also presented. The video was shot in the Latvian National Opera. The concept of the video is to show moods and feelings of next morning after a party, when the last guest has gone home. Action takes place in a typical suburb flat early in the morning. Directors of video are Beta Gore and Kirils Kirasirovs. Beta Gore was also the director of the band’s very first video Christian (I’m Gonna Be).
The Hobos were nominated in four categories at the Latvian Music Awards 2002. For best rock album, best video with Flying Away, radio hit with Lost In Space and best rock song with Flying Away. The Hobos brought home two prizes – Best Rock Song 2002 and Best Rock Album 2002.
The single Lost In Space at the Latvian Top 10 Songs 2002 chart grounded in the fifth place after being highly topped in different Latvian radio stations for 18 weeks.
With a promo tour and album release, The Hobos are making an attempt to enter the music market of German-speaking countries - Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The exclusive album edition, titled Walk All Night, was released on 24 May 2004 via EuroEntertainment/Edel.
On 25 May 2004, The Hobos celebrated their 5th birthday with a Radio Jah Jah album release party at Riga cafe "Ai Karamba", a place where the band performed for the first time back in 1999. Radio Jah Jah is band's fourth studion album and comes on two discs - CD1 (new songs by Rolands Udris) and CD2 (coverversions). The lead single Hero, a cover of Enrique Iglesias' ballad, peaked at No.3 on the Latvian Airplay Chart Spice.
