Bridging the gap between Santa Cruz and Salinas, The Midtones redefine California Reggae with a heavy dose of positive roots. Since 2006, the quintet has been bringing their roots-inspired, skateboard-influenced reggae to clubs, festivals and other events throughout the Bay Area, building a loyal following of fans.
Founded by Mike Marquez, Mony Lujan, and Andrew Nack, The Midtones came together as a Livocation to friend Eric “Stello” Costello who passed away in a tragic skateboarding accident in 2005.
Stello—an energetic and talented drummer credited with bringing the musicians together—shared a lifelong dream of playing reggae music with vocalist Marquez. Just a few weeks after the musicians’ first jam session, while skateboarding Stello suffered a fatal head injury.
Jeremy Campbell took over Stello’s would-be drum duties and the boys recruited Jason Skinner on the keys to continue the dream in honor of Stello.
Whenever possible, a two-piece horn section (saxophonist Barry Capiaux and trumpeter Daniel Miltz) accompanies the band.
Stay tuned for future shows and works from The Midtones.
“Though their impeccable covers of reggae icons Bob Marley and The Gladiators are themselves worth a listen, The Midtones also boast a pretty heady collection of original material. The Santa Cruz quintet mixes classic roots reggae with the tripped out rhythms of dub, an eerie combination that's full of good vibes and positive lyrics. Lead vocalist Mike Marquez delivers messages of optimism while solid bass lines and rhythm guitar/keyboards provide the musical framework. Proving that you don't have to travel to the Caribbean to witness some high-grade reggae music, The Midtones are a fine example of the mass of local talent present on the Central Coast.”
