It has been over a year since The Panic Division announced their hiatus. The details of their hiatus and reasons were never clearly announced, but the name now continues on as Colton Holliday ( front-man ) has announced the release of his solo album, as a 3rd Panic Division album. You may ask yourself why he didn't aptly name the solo effort, Colton Holliday or start with a totally new name all together, but upon first listen to the new solo ep, the answer may jump out at you.
"We were broken up and I was crushed. We could have hired another guitarist but there were way too many factors involved and it really all came down to us being close friends and a genuine, important combination of musicians", Holliday exclaimed. "I had to keep writing music so I decided to write a solo album and do everything myself. I recorded most of the tracks in my bedroom before finally tracking guitar, bass, and vocals at Hollywood Studios. Additional tracks were recorded at Tavis's house as well".
The album is an ideal mesh of both of the band's earlier albums. It has a more aggressive approach now, much like "Versus" while expanding even further into the ambient electro feel of "Songs from the Glasshouse". When asked about the sudden reprise, Holliday responded, "I had a lot of angst from various things happening at that point in time, and felt the need to be more aggressive again, which I thought I had put behind me as far as music was concerned. From the demise of the band at that point, to a psychotic love ending, and to the general position my life was at during that year".
When asked about the day the band broke up, Holliday said, "It was a moment I will never forget. The place. The highway and what it looked like. We were on tour and after Daniel said he was leaving, it felt like such a familiar pain. Heartbreak, really. I couldn't speak the whole way home. The dark humor during this, I will share. It's a memory I will always laugh about. Tavis, our bassist, always wore these hideous boxers on tour. They looked like something out of a clowns closet. Jesse, our drummer, told him he looked like he was in the Spin Doctors and would play that song " If you would like to buy me flowers, just go ahead now". " When we realized we we breaking up, while driving on the highway to what would be our last show on tour, Jesse decided to try and lighten up the situation by putting on that song. As it played we chuckled in a sad way, and while I stared at the highway I told tavis,"I'm just waiting for movie credits to start rolling down the sky". We laughed like crazy because the moment just made sense, and thats my main memory of that day. By the way, our last show that night was the most awful show we ever performed. We were trashed beyond trashed. Tavis threw his bass and snapped the headstock off, I threw my guitar at the drum riser and sat next to the kick drum indian style singing horribly all night, and all the bands touring with us got to witness it all in that moment".
Holliday started the band in high school, although with a different name, and was always responsible for the majority of the writing. "After I finished my solo record, I sent it to friends and fans to get constructive advice, and most of them said what I already figured. They said it sounded like The Panic D. So I decided to release it as another Panic D album. I wanted to keep the name alive and not throw away everything I had worked for over the last decade or more. Sure, its not the full group now, but I figured that I owe it to myself to keep it alive. It has always been my baby, and hey you never know what will happen in the future".
The album, "Sleepwalker" is set for a March 1st, 2009 release. It will be a strictly digital release and available in all major digital retailers such as iTunes ( Worldwide ), Amazon, Rhapsody and many more. When asked what Holliday is up to now in the music business, he said "After finishing Sleepwalker, I moved from Texas up to New York City to start an electronic project with our bassist, Tavis Wilson. We are currently writing in the studio right now".
So will Holliday ever put out an album under his own name? He replied, "Im saving my name for the big picture. The special one. The best work that I have yet to write. Im still having fun at this point".

Thanks for the add! I remember I heard of you guys while I was looking for Panic Channel in the cd store, but bought the Versus album on accident. I was like hey wait, this isn't them! Then it sank in that wow, these guys kind of rock... One of the best mistakes I ever made!
Right. What doesn't make sense about that? The ambient sounds and electronics in the new U2 album sound like they broke into your studio and stole your shit! First time I heard it I thought "Oh shit, Panic D is on the radio!"

Spring is here and so are the butterflies! This week I have a gallery of a particular group of butterflies called Brushfoots. Brushfoots are the most commonly known and encountered of the large colorful butterflies (excluding the swallowtails) found in Florida and the Americas. These include the monarchs, fritillaries, buckeyes, and the viceroy below (who has nearly identical markings as the toxic monarch butterfly) to keep it from being eaten by birds.... cool trick, huh? :-)
Click the butterfly below to see my gallery - and please let me know what you think!
